question about FAQ injector data

The injectors in my '87 TII are purple and appear to have square tops, which doesn't match up with the spec for '87 TII. Not such a big deal, the injectors could have been switched at some point, but then I realized that the part number for the purple 550cc injectors is the same number as for the tan ones, and they also obviously differ in impedance as well, unless I'm reading it wrong.

86-87 13B Turbo, low square center, 550cc, tan, 195500-1370
88 13B Turbo, high square offset, 550cc, purple, 195500-1370

Can someone clear this up? What are actually on my car? High impedance injectors? it's not such a big deal as long as they're supplied with the right voltage...

They switched over in mid/late 87 which is probably what your car is.

that explains one thing, but it doesn't explain the part numbers being the same.

Sorry I didn't notice that before. That has to be a mistake. The imp. is different on them is really the big difference. Check mazdatrix's website they have 2 different part numbers for the different injectors.

well I brought it up here not only so I could find some sort of answer, but also so that the FAQ could be updated for accuracy.

you probably have high impedance purple tops and someone took out the injectors resistor pack when they put them in. check the offset of the injectors if you want to know for sure. its visible when u open the hood (i may be a liar and thinking of NA's). if you want to know 100% take the plug off a secondary injector and check the resistance between the pins. i wouldnt rely on color too much, alot of the 88 'purples' were really red. check the model #, offset and or impedance with a dmm. from what i gather model # is good to tell u what capacity the injectors are.

remember all the ECU's wanted to see high impedance. in 86-87 they accomplished this by putting in the resistor pack. all others they used high impedance injectors.

it's a BRIGHT purple, and I believe the PO's replaced them in the last couple years, too, so they're fairly new.

could you explain how I would measure the offset?

and thanks for the info about impedance and how Mazda went about that, that should come in handy later.

when looking at the plug as if you were the harness this notch is either center or offset (off to the right).

the 86-87.5 low impedance injectors are purple, they fade to a tannish color
the 87.5-88 HIGH impedance injectors are red

i say dont trust the color. ive seen too many variations. i have an ORANGE / 195500-1350 / 680CC / HIGH impedance injector off an RX7. tell me where that one is listed.

offset will usually be a better bet than color. nothing beats a resistance test.
