Q about TII drivetrain problem
Hi everyone. im new to this board as my post number should tell. Me and my wife just picked up a 87 tII for 1000 bucks. its starts and runs fine but there is a horrible noise coming somewhere from the middle or rear of the car. Heres the detailed specifics. The struts are all blown on the car and I ordered tokikos which are on the way. I also have a cat back exhaust on the way as I wasnt sure if maybe it was rubbing or something since the struts are blown and the whole body sits lower than it should. This noise on happens when tehre is not pressure on the car. It happens when under 2k rpm or in neutral. its a constant clunk clunk clunk ever second or so and if I have the gas pedal pressed in more than 15% or are cruising above 3k it doesnt make the sound. It also does it when i hit the break. now I know the struts are noisy because when i push ont he rear the feel like marshmellows and make really loud sounds. But even when Im not going over bumps I can hear it. Also I jacked the car up yesterday and looked at all mounts I could see from the bottom of the car ie: one motor mount/stranny mounts and diff mounts and kind of tugged on the components to see if any of them were loose with a broken or missing mount. It didnt do theis when I first bought the car 1 month ago and started 2 weeks ago and seemed to get worse. Any help would be appricated. Sorry about the long post

Hi, and welcome to the best RX source around.
I, also have the '87 TII and am getting an obnoxious clunk when I shift gears. I've been told that this is most likely the front differential mount. I haven't had time to explore this idea in depth, but intend to after today's snowstorm melts away (likely by Friday).
Anyway, your description makes me think that you may have a similar problem. If the front diff mount has failed, it can easily hop around and make a godawful racket.
I did take time to have a quick look mine and visually all looks well, but I've been told that you often need to remove the mount to discover the damage.
Also, the Factory Service Manual (referenced here as FSM) would be helpful. The suspension diagrams are very informative. ( I can send you a PDF copy if you would like. Just leave a PM here, or send an email to kelly@kkoop.com.)
I've been working on restoration & upgrade this year, and have found this site to be absolutely indispensible.
BTW, I notice you are in Colorado. I'm in Lakewood, perhaps we should stay in touch - share experiences and such?
