Proud new owner of FC, questions...

Well, ive gotten very lucky, after wrecking my mx6 and not recieving much compensation from allstate, ive come across an 87 mazda rx7 sport model and its been given to me for free, problem is, the engine is blown and it just survived(???maybe???) a flood, so the tranny may need to be rebuilt to im not sure, what do you guys think? and how much should i expect for an engine rebuild? any other random info i might need to get this thing running?

$2000 engine rebuild, and probably replacement of the transmission - I would pass on it if you're looking for a daily driver...

If you can get them cheap used, then got for it...

These things are not usually in good shape for being ~15 years old, and Mazda has real crappy paint - but if you think it's worth it, go for it!

How deep was the water? Over the rocker panels, strip the carpet out check the drain plug in the bottom of the spare tire well and be prepared to replace the exhaust system too if it's stock. crappy mild steel rusts out if it runs through a puddle.

If the water was dashboard deep, forget about it. Sometimes, a free car is just too expensive. That would mean all the electronics and gauges, the fuel tank, etc...

If you were intending to strip it down and make it a no-holds-barred racer, go for it. You would be replacing everything anyway. But you said you want a cool high school car for your senior year. Save the money and look for a better one. They are out there and they can be found cheap. Besides, your date won't want to go to the prom in a car with a full roll cage, no upholstery, no stereo, no sound or heat insulation, no window glass, and electronic ignition boxes under her feet. Don't ask me how I know this... I just do.

That's a pretty tough choice. If a $1200 engine and tranny is all you would need, then you might want to go for it. On the other hand, if you are really careful and look around, you can find a running N/A for less than that.

yeah, i guess you guys may be right, it appears to be a lost cause, its a shame. i took a better look today and i think the water may have gone above the dash, theres even dead fish in the floor board. and i needs pretty much everything in the engine bay replaced. i cant fork out that kinda money. Maybe some of yall heard about the flooding here in Albany Texas? i think we were on good morning america. i still think there might another rx7 here in town but i think it got flooded too, maybe its for sale, guess ill have to check it out. oh well thanks guys.

Well $1200 is more than alot of people pay around here for fully running NAs. What about taking it and just parting out what you can? Just straight profit then.

Dead fish on the floorboards...I don't think the carpet is worth much.

Ryde or Die has the idea....grab it and part it out for complete profit.

Since a lot of people don't know much about rotaries, they often get put aside as "dead" when they're just flooded.. I bought a "broken" 87 se for 250$ because I was 99% sure the engine was just flooded... turns out I was right, and $2.00 worth of ATF later, I had myself a running car.

Point is that there are a LOT of good deals out there, especially if you know what's up.
