Talking Project "engagement" FC

Whats up mates,

So i am in the process of building an FC Turbo and as it says in the title, it will be used as an engagement present (along with the ring) to my GF. To give you a little history of the project and idea, my GF has come to a gizzillion TA sessions with me in my STi and ever since i let her behind the wheel, she's dreamed of her own track car. Last june, her eyes fixed on a buddies FC and after all the talking about the car, the little light bulb turned on in my head to build her a mid level track car as an engagement present.

So last week i was blessed to find an 87 T-II in pretty damn good condition for $950. Body was clean, no rust, no crashes and most of all, all pieces there. THe only thing was that i had to rebuild the motor.

As of last night, i have pulled out the motor, taken the tranny out, disassembled all housings, rotors, etc and i am in the process of cleaning all the parts. After hours and hours of research and vids, i found and tested that all my internals are pretty freaking intact and i dont have to buy any other rotors or housing. Now i am wondering is there an inexpensive rehaul kit for the 13B? (inexpensive meaning less than $1000) i have seen a few but they range $1300 or so.

HOw is this kit> any good or bad remarks? 87-88 Turbo Rx7 Overhaul Kit A (ARE36)

I know that after that kit i will also need
Apex Seals
Apex Seal Springs
Oil Pump Chain
Oil Filter
correct? (any other parts that i am missing?)

Any suggestions where i could get or piece this whole package for less than $1000?
i will be doing a mild streetport and exhaust port so i know that i will need an EMS (thats why i want to keep the rehaul for less than $1000). Or can i run the stock T-II ECU with a mild street port? (remapping? can we even remap RX7 ecu's?) Which ECU would you recommend if i need to purchase one. Rollcage, V-mount, ect i will do myself as i have done it in my previous cars and friends cars.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Also, any upgrades that you guys would consider i should do please shoot them to me as i am already deep into the project =)

and i anyone lives in the rancho cucamonga area and wants to help me wrench and properly build this motor.. ill return the favor in some way or another (cages, contacts, etc)

I reused my oil pump chain. On my rebuild i'm always discovering that something new is in need of replacing, what really helped me is to disassemble and make a list of all the little things I needed.

Ecu depends on what kind of power and Turbo you'll be running.

Rtek chips the stock ecu and it works well but has its limits, they make a few different stages.

Though if you have the money to get a stand alone its a much better choice, the price difference is relative to the ecu's tuning abilities the rtek being $150 or so having none (unless you get stage 2 for $450 )and a haltech being anywhere from $600 used to $1000+ new

I was considering in reusing my chain and oil pump as well but i will measure the chains flex from stock and go from there. And yes i am doing that at the moment. i will post my list once im done picking apart everything.

This is great info!! thanks for that! i will definitely look into the Rtek Section. Now since i will be doing a mild street porting, would the Rtek work with it? Of course its better to go EMS but i want to gain some knowledge. Also, what do you think of the PowerFC compared to the Haltech. (i use Motec in my STi and by buddy PowerFC in his LS1 Turbo 240)

If you are sticking to the stock turbo make sure you port the waste gate.

Thanks for that tip mate. My goal for this car and my girls safety is 300 to 350 WHP. Being that she will be learning the car i dont want to overwhelmed her with too much power. The STi was a bit too much for her.

What are the max capabilities of a stock turbo with a ported waste gate? Has anybody done house porting in the stock FC's turbo here? Any links with stock turbos ported would help me tremendously if anybody know of any.

Stock Turbo is good for up to 240-250+ whp depending if the engine is ported , and the tune/supporting mods.

To get more power there is the option of upgrading the Turbo to a hybrid www.bnrsupercars.com offers them in 4 stages

Just run it stock and then buy a legit turbo and EMS when you're ready to spend the money. If you're looking for a hard hitter an RTek and BNR turbo will just be a waste of money in the long run.

If you're looking for a stock car with a little extra oomph, get an S5 Turbo/Manifold, port the waste gate, upgrade the fuel pump, and get an RTek 1.7 or higher so you can run 720 secondaries.

Well it will not be stock. Internally-wise i will be doing an intake and exhaust mild street/race port (buying a template from pineapple racing), will be running larger injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump, and all supporting mods necessary. I do have an old FP Green Turbo that i used to use in my STi but i dont think it would fit the FC manifold unless i create a custom adaptor (i think...)

What i am trying to find out is how can i reach the 350 goal using as many stock parts as possible. I do have money to spend but i want to be conscious in the spending as i will still need suspension mods, cage, tyres and wheels and all that good stuff.

Is there any build that i could perhaps replicate? any posts out there? i have been doing a lot of search but the search feature in this forum sends me to very general posts (unless my searching skills really suck )

check out the dyno and time slips section , there are lots of different setups on there you have so many different options its endless lol

as I stated earlier the cheapest bang for your buck is the bnr Turbo upgrade and it uses all the stock Turbo and manifold parts and is Bolton from what I know.

For some it falls short of what they were looking for , I personally have never had one it I know the response is slower than stock due to the cutting the fins on the Turbo to increase flow.

As far as other turbos I'm not sure what would be a good choice for cost, but I know upgrading turbos can get pricey for a nice quality kit (not Chinese eBay Turbo).

check out the parts classifieds and regional classifieds for your area, lots of deals to be found nbe careful and check their itrader score , its transaction feedback , some people I hate to say do sell parts and never send them on here.

User BLUE TII has probably the best performing hybrid turbo on the forums, although he's modified his extensively.

eage8 is running a BNR Stage 2 on his widebody FC - doesn't make 350 but he's having a hell of a good time with it. https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...turbo-1031251/

A BNR Stage 3 or 4 would get your 300-350 easily - you might even find one here used for a steal.

It might also be wise to set the car up with a surge tank as these cars are prone to fuel starvation in corners at <1/2 tank. Problem solved if you go with a fuel cell

Thanks for all the info. Yeah I've been checking them out and it seems like a nice hybrid snail. Unless I don't find a used one for a nice price I will go for a larger upgrade tho. I got a few contacts at garret so I know I'll get the hommie hook up

What other mods can you steer me to tho? Little secret mods that it would take me a tons to research and find? I just found about block off plates! Hahaha oh I have. Long way to go.....

Thanks for steering me in the right way.. I'll check blue's project and mod list. Yeah I have heard of sevenstock a lot lately from a buddy I mine (Lenny, the white Initial D FC) I think I will go to check it out and meet ppl.

And I am most def putting. Surge tank. For safety And now lack of fuel starvation lol

How hard is it to install a surge tank, is it worth getting for a street car that's driven spiritedly?

Never even knew about these , good info.


As far as other mods, methanol injection kits are very nice, dtss Eliminators as well.

It's not hard at all. It's just a matter of proper placement, properly measured fuel lines, a few cuts in your fire wall, extensions for your alternator cables to surge fuel pump (if running externally) and a strong fuel pump according to how many ml of fuel you will be running per combustion cycle.

It is not worth it to run on a DD car IMO. Plus you'll have a big box in your trunk or whether you place it for now reason lol.

So I guess the answer is to just not corner hard etc with less than half a tank and my car will be a daily/street car.

Bump:any suggestion on what's the best way to clean the coolant rust and oil and oil off the passages? Drip them in hot water? Use engine solvent? Etc.. Thank you

I guess so I just learned that myself. I don't have that problem in my STi but again my STi is like 15 years newer. lol

im not saying its a common problem, but I'm the type of person that takes all possible problems that can occur and do everything I can to prevent them.

There's nothing wrong with having a strong defense.

Being low on gas , especially wiith the gas light on its pretty obvious you shoudlnt be doing anything to cause high gforces (hard cornering under load).

there are a lot of ways to get to 300-350hp.

one way is to run the modded stock turbos/BNR, and tune the thing to the edge, and you're looking at 300-350, depending on the all the little things.

the second is just to run a T4, bigger turbo on a stock engine will do 300-350 no problem. with the big turbo route, a streetport is optional, the stock ports are actually pretty good, so if you're porting smaller is better. spend the money on seals/housings instead.

the last turbo car i did was a mild ported S5 engine that was NEW, HKS cast manifold, 60-1 turbo, RB turbo back, and it did 392RWHP@12psi.

fuel will be about the same for either setup, and the new injectors are better, so i'd run the EV14's or the ID injectors all the way around. bosch 044 pump, and just be done with it.

ecu is up to you, 350hp has been done on the Rteks, but its a little beyond what they are really meant to do. and you will need intercooler/radiator...

keep in mind that 300hp in an FC is FAST, its a light car
