Currently purchasing a S4 N/A Rx7. I'm building a drift car and need around 400-450rwhp. Would you recommend finding a S5 TII and building it or just going for the 20B. Money is a concern I don't have 20k to spend.

I don't want to sound ignorant but can the 13B handle 450rwhp ? Also anything other than rotary is out of the equation. I want to stay true to the design and prove these motors are just as good. Also I noticed you said S4 turbo so I'm assuming you don't recommend an S5 turbo motor then.

Your goals seem unrealistic.
Read this thread to see what goes into a 400-450whp drift build.

Look up Aaroncake's Project TINA build - that was an S4 NA-turbo build (so he turbo'd the six port, not a TII swap). That would help give you an idea of what goes into making serious horsepower (and doing so for more than a short while). A lot of planning, a lot of fabrication - and some real money for quality parts and supporting mods, even if you do all the work yourself.

@Mr. Criss...
What level of mechanical expertise do you bring to this project, what sort of equipment is available? What racing experience do you have?
Ignoring (for now) the debate of how you get to 450hp, after you've climbed the mountain, how do you finance a campaign? I'd guess drifting absolutely hoovers through tires and they seem prone to suspension/body damage- all expensive stuff to maintain, over and above whatever running costs are associated with a high strung rotary engine.
And about the engine...
Seems like drifting would require more torque than horsepower- don't you spend most of your time spinning tires through relatively slow corners?
Wouldn't bottom end be more useful than power up top?

Hello,
I've built RB25s with my brother who seems to be pushing where I wanna be but has less than 10k in his motor. I have decent funds, I would like to stay around 4-6k in the motor so nothing insane but some decent change. Correct on the torgue which is why I assumed having a smaller turbo would thus spool faster and sooner so I thought that would be beneficial. Correct me if im wrong though.

I have tools or access to the ones I will need. So far my real challenge is finding where to buy everything and how much things are worth.

I think your will either need to comprise your budget or compromise your expectations and do the car in steps. A quality rebuild or recently rebuilt motor will be starting in the neighborhood of $2k+. Quality turbo, manifold, and associated parts $4500+. Quality engine management $1000+. Fuel system overhaul somewhere around $1500. Add suspension and you're already busting the budget, not factoring fluids and other assorted parts required when making a 30 year old car road worthy, let alone track ready.

[QUOTE=DC5Daniel;12060680]Cresting 300 is more realistic. You'll be able to use a hybrid turbo on the stock manifold, saving a lot of cost (both directly and indirectly in relation to supporting mods).[/QUOTE
Awesome thank you!

450hp isn't really hard, you pretty much just need a big turbo. the hard part is keeping it all together, you pretty much need to re-engineer the cooling system, fuel system, turbo, intercooler, ecu etc, and then keep the transmission together too.
the Apexi drift FD was making about 450hp back in like 2001, so its been done, a lot, a long time ago
the nice thing about the FC though is that it can do ok drifting nearly stock.
the S4 or S5 engine isn't going to matter, it needs to be rebuilt and a bigger turbo anyways

they need to be rebuilt. unless you get lucky these engines are 25 years old, radioactive, and have been through several hurricanes and a tsunami.

For most people, the somewhat standard build of a 13B-T, street port, big turbo, standalone, etc. is the way to go. Must of it is bolt on, well known and documented.

Fair enough, I was getting more at showing what went into doing a big power build in terms of supporting mods, as well as the needed creativity and fab skills to cut costs of buying a pile of parts. So I meant it to be dissuading, not persuading from the idea of a big power, low buck build.
