Are your spark plugs coming out literally wet with fuel after cranking?
I am in the exact same position as you and when I removed my plugs after cranking (with EGI fuse in) they were literally wet fouled with fuel and small amounts of oil, but when smelling them all I can smell is the gasoline. I would imagine your plugs should be the same way if all is working correctly.

ok dude. I have the same problem right now. This is what you need to do. I would crank my car and it would sound like it had great compression but I would pull the plugs and no fuel or anything on them. I tried all the deflood tricks but it was obvious that I was getting no fuel.
You need to try this. There is a connector near the passenger shock tower in the engine bay. You need to get a small wire and put two flat connectors on each end and stick one connector in each part of the open harness. With the key in the ignition you will hear the fuel pump system pressurize. I did this and then it started.
However with you cranking the car over and not hearing anything but a whine it sounds extremely flooded which sounds just like this when that happens.

If none of that works, then check the relay by the sterring colum. And then check the pump it's self. It is easy to get to, just take the screws in the truck acsess panel out and there it is.

Test it, first start by plugging it back in and then jumpping the yellow connector by the airbox, that will send power tot he relay to try to turn the fuel pump on.
Listen for a click fromt he relay, if you hear it then it is most likly good, if not then you need to test the relay by appling voltage to it and seeing if it clicks.

Sorry to hijack the thread guys but
Is the fuel pump relay located under neath the dash? ie Is there a cover or anything that needs to be romoved or is it just inderneath there? Thanks
Should have a black base with a yellow bottom?

It is mounted upsidedown. Yellow will be on top and the black on bottom. Pretty hard to miss though.

I am still tinkering with this.
Pull started it and seemed fine just wouldnt start/idle. no abnormal noises or metal to metal contact. still thinking fuel is the issue here...

My 86 wouldnt start after going into a store so I walked across the street and bought a can of ether and sprayed it into the air cleaner. Not alot. After the second try I held the pedal to the floor and it started chugging a bit. A touch more ether and she cranked and came to life. Like he said, put the pedal to the floor to get as much air to flow through as possible. LOL
