Just because the engine is ported doesn't mean it automatically requires premium gas. the timing is the only thing that changes what octane you should run. If he messed with the timing and changed it from stock (which is 87 despite what some say) to run premium then you will need to run premium, or retard the timing.

You can run any on the cheap gas , but I'm sure everyone will agree with me when I say a turboed Rotary should only be running premium 91+ if it plans on boosting.
