Problem with Headlights

Yet another gremlin in the car.

Last year I stripped out the interior of my FC to have the 6pt roll cage installed and to reduce weight. I only put back in a cut down version of the dash (shell of dash and gauge cluster).

Because I now have to put 1000 miles on the new motor to break it in I decided to put back in the piece around the gauge cluster that holds all of the switches so I could use the blinkers and headlights.

That went in with no problem and all of the lights on the car would come on (side lights, rear lights, gauge lights, blinkers, etc.) except the headlights did not pop up. At this point I had not put the light bulbs back in. I used the manual headlight pop-up switch and they came up just fine.

With the ignition key off and the headlight switch off (but manual pop-up switch in up position) I plugged in the drivers side headlight. It light up and I could hear a buzzing noise in front of the radiator. I immedietly unplugged it and tried the passenger side, same results. The light came on and there was a buzzing noise in front of the radiator.
After some investigation I found it was the relay that was making the loud noise any time a headlight was plugged in. I tried it with the ignition on, headlight switch on, and all combinations of on and off. Same result every time. Lights would shine and relay would buzz.
This tells me I have a short somwhere in the headlight system.

Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

Is it possible this is just in the switch or should I try and start with tracing the wires?

Thanks.

Almost sounds like the connection's reversed doesn't it I'm not sure but check download & check the electrical diagram in the service manual.
