Check out the parts forum.
Many "macho" drivers have removed the power steering, and they may have the parts laying around.

Nothing "MACHO" about removing it. Just about all the pre 80's muscle cars don't have it and THEY ARE HEAVY@! its no big deal to not have power steering. I am a light weight and I can drive without it easily. Three of my cars didn't have power steering and all three were daily drivers.

RxSpoof - Hey, I like my power steering too Don't let them talk you out of it for a hose. They're hella easy to replace. get one off the car, take it down to advance/autozone/pepboys/etc/ and tell them you need "X" feet of this hose. Really easy I forget the size, or I'd tell you.

I aree I tried to be a man and run my car without it but to tell you the truth I like the feel of power steering. Yes it may add a couple of hp if you don't have it and reduce some wieght but really common that is why I put all these mods on my car so that it can more than compinsate for the load the ps. puts on my car.

Time to remove that effer out of the engine bay. You start to realise how unassisting ps assist has been all these years after you drive two days w/o it.

I removed the P/S system from my car...ake out pump, lines/fluid and the effort is really pretty easy. I only notice it when I'm turning from a dead stop, otherwise I never think about it. PLUS, my daily driver Galant VR4 still has it and it's way over-assisted. So, it's not even that huge a difference to go from my GVR4 to my RX-7 other than at parking lot speeds.

Please, if you are going to remove your power steering, do it the right way. Swap the power rack with the manual rack. Don't just rip out the pump. The manual rack is almost perfectly balanced, and a joy to use. The power rack without the pump is a pain in the ***. Much stiffer then it has to be.

But most of those muscle cars had like something 5-6 turns lock to lock so its a lot easier to turn than something with 3.5 turns.

I have driven a manual rack. It sucked donkey nuts compared to a power rack. One project idea I had for a product was a power rack lube kit. It would consist of a short hose loop with a resivoir so that the rack doesn't destroy itself in a couple of years. I love working without all the stupid luxuries getting in the way. And driving is 80% the same. Above 15mph its cake to drive. The only things I have had SOME trouble stressing the SOME is a three point turn and parallel parking. Other than that its simply great. You also gain a little muscle if your not used to it lol. Four or five pluses and two small downers. Overall its a win win.

I've had FC's with power and manual rack. Plus my friend had a disconnected power rack that I drove too. I actually prefer the power rack. With a disconnected power rack, I'd actually be slower in auto-x since I can't swing my car around as fast in the tighter turns and its more of a pain in the *** commuting in San Francisco. I'm sure I'd have no problems with a disconnected PS rack in Texas though. Stop and go traffic really sucks here.

I think I said this one before. The only way to know if you will like it is to take off the belt and run it like that for a couple of days. If you can't handle it then just put the belt back on. If you can, CHUCK IT!

Hmmm...after reading all of this I might just take out my PS belt and give it a try for a couple days. Who knows, maybe I will love it and maybe I will hate it. I'll do that starting today or tommorow. I'll post back in a couple of days and tell you all how I feel after driving with my PS ever since January.

It's MUCH heavier than necessary then though since you're pushing the weight of all that fluid. Remove/drain PS pump is the correct way to disable. Aaron is right about the manual rack, I have to get one...one of these days. I just had the TII swap done just over a month ago and wanted to ditch P/S in effort to offset the additional weight of the turbo and GReddy FMIC. Also, I didn't have to cut the FMIC piping w/ the P/S removed. A/C was ditched as well. The effort is really not bad at all...BUT this is not my daily car.

i dont know if any one mentioned it, but if you remove the power sterring pump, you have to disconnect the power steering computer also, or else you get a nice annoying beeping sound from under the dash.

I haven't had a chance to swap a manual rack in my car but mine is really easy to turn. I mean in a parking lot its even easy and I weigh 150 and am 5'9". No problem at all. I had been driving my exploder for a while and was thinking my car would feel hard to turn, but once I got in it I forgot I didn't have PS.

I tried fixing my leaky pump a number of times, Finally I ripped the pump out to get it rebuilt or replaced. But after about 2 week of driving without it, and noticing my larger forarms, I decided to keep it off. The next week after that decision I removed the rest of the Power steering components. When ever I drive a car with Power steering now, I always get surpised when I turn the wheel. I guess I just like the feeling of having a car thats harder for other people to drive.
