Power Steering Fluid

The RX7 manual calls for ATF DEXRON II for the POWER STEERING. The PEP BOYS tell me DEXRON III is OK. This stuff is RED in color. I cleaned off my dipstick and not a trace of red.

Question: Can I add the RED fluid to the reservoir?
Question: Could the previous owner put in the wrong fluid or are there other color fluids that will work?

The power steering works fine. Any help?

Go with the Dexron II. If the manual calls for that stuff then use it. I have an 87 gxl and I just added the same stuff to my power steering.
Dexron II will be fine!

Can't find Dex II

DOGG, I can't find the DEX II, the DEX III should be OK but it is RED in color. Is the DEX II also red? Will it mix OK with whatever the former owner put in there? The dipstick looks for brown in color.

Yeah, dexII and dexIII are both red in color. dexIII wasn't around in the year your car was made. DexIII will be ok

What year is your car? Vehicle-speed-sensitive power assist systems (86-89, exc 89 GTU) are supposed to use Type F atf. Engine-speed-sensitive power (89 GTU, 90-91 exc TII) assist uses Dexron atf.

If your fluid is not red, you've got problems. You need to flush the system out thoroughly. Follow along in this thread:

Flush procedure is at bottom of first page.
