Power Steering: Continuous beeeep fixed.

Like the pirate with the wheel attached to the front of his pants said; this was driving me nuts.

The continuous beep was happening in cold weather, and when the interior of the car would warm up, the beep would stop. Long story short, I figured out that it was the electrolytic capacitors had degraded enough that in cold temps the PS controller would fail. I replaced all of them, and the problem hasn't returned, and my power steering works like new again. (except for that damn leak!)

If anyone would like me to do a writeup with photos, let me know.

Mine beeps five times if i can remember right. i have an 88 NA and when i had my 87 NA, it did the same thing. after going through a lot of research and replacing the computer it still did it so i said **** it and i pulled the computer back out and did a non power steering conversion on the 87. one day i was just driving down the road and the 88 started doing it too so i just reached down and unplugged it and never thought twice about it. the power steering is not right of course, but it never really bothered me. just curious though, do you have any ideas?

Hey Wmele25, the five beeps should be covered somewhere in the FAQ, but it means that your controller isn't getting the signal from the steering angle sensor. If your turn signals don't cancel, the problem is in your turn cancel sensor on the steering column. It may just not be connected.

My p/s computer had the same problem. It only beeped in the winter. After I took my blown engine out, I de-powered the rack to save weight. Works like a charm now (takes a bit more effort at low speeds), and I no longer need that silly little computer or the p/s pump.

Here's where I learned how to do it:

Except I took things a step further, and had the quill/pinion taken apart and welded together properly.
