Fatigue cracking of poor metal maybe? There's more than ultimate failure strength going on here, and handles take more force to open as they linkage goes out of adjustment over the years. I really think it's a metal composition / fatigue situation, not an ultimate load situation.

When I got my '91 FC a year or so ago, my pass. side handle was already broke and the car only had 80,000 miles on it... Not to mention, I think someone out there knows that these lock cylinders are crap because I have found mine screwed with after leaving the car in the same place for a week or two... this only makes my key work even worse! Thank god they didn't get in though.. must not've been very good car thieves. =)

both of my door handles broke within 3 months of each other. the passenger side breaking was just shocking. that side gets 1/100 the use the driver side does.
i had to pull the ones off my project car or my *** would be crawling through the hatch.
which i seemingly have to do once per year anyway when both my doors/locks get frozen.
