porting

nothing on the engine is reusable, so I'm gunna port it. I was wondering what I should do? I know I need a template, but I have no clue how to make one. Any help would be nice

ummmm if nothing is reuseable then how are you going to port it. Porting bad rotor housings doesn't make them good. Just wonderin!

its just a waste of time porting a plate that is screwed, it takes 2-3 hours for the middle houseing to do it right. get some good houseings and build a motor

Perhaps he was going to use the bad ones as a practice round? Better screw up a junky one then a perfectly good one.

Are you porting the plates for practice or is it that nothing on the engine besides the side plates is useable?

Either way, it is a good idea in my book.

I personally would start w/ buying porting templates from Racing Beat as a starting point and do A LOT of reading on the subject before even touching the die grinder to the iron.

The porting templates will show the "recommended" face of the port that will dictate actual port timing (opening/closing), but it is up to you to decide how the face of the port interfaces w/ the port runner.

For example on the top closing section of the intake port can that face can be brought straight down into the runner or must you round it from the face of the port to the runner in order to avoid breaking into the water jacket? On the outer opening section of the port should you just clean up the short radius the air must take to enter the engine or reduce the thickness of the plate here and make the radius more gradual?

There are many other areas on each port to make decisions about and then you have to look at the interaction of the primary and secondary ports as well.

I haven't done any rotary engine porting yet (although I have ported a head, turbos, manifolds, etc). I am still in the "reading up" stage of rotary porting myself!

I agree with blue TII, great info. If you wanna learn a lot more about the topic, I highly reccommend checking out the porting/rotary building forum over at nopistons.com. They have a great thread covering it.

thanks blue tII. YES, nothing on the whole engine is reusable except the e-shaft, which was in great condition. I knew I needed to buy templates, but wasnt sure where. thanks. ( and yes , it is a good idea to practice on a blown engine, it's not a waste of time) if you screw up new stuff, then how are ya gunna feel????? thats why you learn from your mistakes on the blown things, and then do the new stuff!

Though porting is time consuming, the time I spent doing a couple practice ports paid off when I did my final ports. Experience pays when taking a grinder to an orifice that exits a precision surface. Scratches on the side plates are not good for the engine when assembled, and while I can't speak for everyone who may attempt their own port job for the firs time, I can say that I needed time to build skill before becoming proficient enough to create acceptable ports. This was my second attempt at a primary port (note the scratches).

Racing Beat will have everything you need! From templates to grinding tools. That’s where I got all of my templates. Here is the link for a street port, browse the site they got allot of templates.
