Popping Noise

Question: When I'm cruising along at 4th gear doing under 35mph and downshift or take my feet of the gas pedal, I hear a huge loud popping noise, like a gun shot from the rear of the car, is my muffler shooting out flames or what? It happens a few time and I got scared and pull off to check if my tires are still on. Anybody have any idea?

rotarys backfire a lot... my friend had horible problems with that untill he took off all the emmisions and put on his new exhaust system... maybe time to look for a new exhaust... and you wont be shoot flames unless your exhaust is warm by semi fast driving... i only get them after a few min of highway driving!

Better make sure it's not the rear end, my 87 TII started making a popping noise in the rear end area when I would do exactly what you are talking about. It ended being a couple of braces had broken that hold the rear end in. But I would try what "bcty" said to do first, try a new exhaust.

thanks, guess it would help if i actually installed the fuel controller and fuel pump as well as the a/f meter and and egt after installing the turbo and intercooler. I cranked it over the weekend (annual hot rod event) and trutle my way down the blvd to show all the hondas, lucky the popping noise scared off many and i didn't have to spool up against one. I have full exhuast turbo back and no cat, is this one of my problem? I didn't have this problem prior to the upgrades.

BCTY,
The engine is still very strong. I did blocked off the bac and removed the air pump. I'm just afraid to redline it without all the other mods on. But will be installing them this weekend, so hopefully I will be able to see if it does anything. Hmm, I forgot if it was popping or not when I was on the hiway.

Poppinrex7,
I have the racingbeat turbo back exhuast on, a lot quieter than the buschur 2.5" turbo back for my eclipse.
