Unhappy Poll : Troublesome RX-7 - Fix it or scrap it?

As you all have probably seen from my numerous posts asking questions about problems I'm having with my car, I've got quite a few of them, and I really haven't found any definite answers as to what is causing all of them, and the answers that I have found, are going to cost a lot of money to fix. This is the current situation with my car:

It stalls and dies while idling if the AC is on occasionally.

Front left fender and headlight bucket are fucked, so is the hood to some extent.

The exhaust appears to be overheating and clogged, and a mysterious oil leak somewhere in its vicinity causes occasional small fires.

Not only is it an automatic transmission, but it does not even work properly. Possible internal damage or whatever.

I would like to be able to keep it. The interior is in showroom condition, the dealership said the engine was in excellent condition, and I only got it recently. Up until this collapse of the car's condition, it ran beautifully and reliably. I know the previous owner and it was well taken care of, but now I fear that it has reached the end of its life, and it only has 80k on it. I would just like somebody to tell me exactly what needs to be done with this car to make it run good again, but around here, everytime I ask people about a reliable and honest rotary mechanic, people can only tell me how they have been screwed, never any stories of success. Does anybody here know a good rotary mechanic in the south Florida area? I no longer have the space to perform work myself, and I really don't want to dump a ton of money into this car just to get screwed over. At this point, I am ready to just call it quits, part out anything that is good, and scrap the chassis, but I'd rather have my car back.

stalling with the A/c on is the BAC not working properly. (I have two BAC's for sale )

You can get a new headlight assembly from a junk yars for cheap. If not I also happen to have one on the parts car. A fender can be accuired easilly for 50 dollars.

Gut the catalitic converters if they are cloged and enjoy the extra HP for free.

As for the auto trans I beleive kevin laders has some 5 spd trannies. He could probably hook you up with all the parts to do a swap.

As for the oil leak I don't know. I would have to see some pics of the area.

I say stick it out if you like the car. If not just sell it to someone that wants to work on it. If you were in Texas I would gladly take it off your hands.

PM me if you want the parts I have. They probably will fix some of the smaller problems you have. To find a good shop in FL check the regional forums. I would still prefer to have myself be the only person to work on the car.

To be honest, it's a roll of the dice every time you turn the key. In all fairness, thats not unusual for a 10+ year old car, especially a sports car. To most of us, it's worth the trouble, but that's something you have to decide for yourself. If you had a TII i'd say buy a daily driver, but since it's an n/a thats designed to be more of a fun daily driver anyway. I'm not trying to start another war here, by the way. I had an n/a and loved it just as much as I love my turbo, but it doesn't make sense to me to buy a daily driver that's going to be just as fast as your fun car... Anyhow, I'd try to fix it but thats just me.

I agree with 1987rx7guy. If you know where to look, you can get stuff for cheaper.

check this site for car body parts. Most are pretty cheap. They will need to be painted since they come painted with a coat of primer. http://www.carpartsstreet.com/

If you are familiar at all with rotary engines, and this isn't your daily driver, I would keep the car and try to fix it. If you decide not to, at least try to see that it goes to someone who knows RX-7s and would be able to fix it.

KEEP IT!!! My RX has sat in my friend's yard for almost 3 months now...it's a pain, but they're damn good cars.

Keep it, fix it, you'll be happier once you do

Well, I'm certainly getting a good influx of good information both here and through PM on what I can do. When put into total perspective, it looks like this car really isn't going to need all that much to get running again properly. I have a good idea of how much I am going to have to pay for all of the parts and I have located a good mechanic who can help by personal recommendation.

I don't even know what the **** I was thinking. Sharon (my GTU) is a bitch, but I have had girlfriends worse than this. This car is definitely worth saving. I have just had too many bad experiences with cars shitting themselves to death. I'm not going to let this become another rusted skeleton at a yard. I never want to get rid of this car ever, even if it is "just" an N/A.

I always wanted to get one and do a retractable hardtop conversion on one, with carbon fiber.
