please help ignition problem

Hey whats going on everyone. Im a diehard mustang fan but i love all cars. Im sure as a newbie on here Ill get flamed for saying that but i guess it goes with the territory. The reason Im on here is that Ive taken on a challenge with a friends car. The background of the car is this. My friend bought the car in a non-running condition with a blown motor. I know this in itself poses problems but thats what i have. He spent the money having the motor rebuilt and him and another friend re-installed it. That was 8 months ago and the car still hasnt run.

I have the haynes manual for the car and have gone through the basics of checking resistance in the leading and trailing coil packs and also the crank sensor. I have also recently replaced the ignition switch on the car on advice from another friend to no avail. When i attempt to start the key with the ignition switch i get very erratic spark. what i mean by erratic is that it will spark sometimes and not others. Sometimes it will spark 2 or 3 times when i first try to crank it and it will spark once usually as i release the key. What i did notice is that if i spin the crank angle sensor by hand i get a good strong spark at all plugs. I have the crank angle sensor installed properly with the alignment marks in thier respective positions. The other thing i tried was jumping the starter. This resulted in again a nice strong spark at all plugs but still no starting. It may have been flooded out when I tried that so I will try the un-flooding tips I found in other posts. Hopefully someone on here can point me in the right direction so that the rx7 nightmares will go away.

Thanks in advance to all who reply

steve

It's obvious it is not a spark issue.

It might be flooded.

It might be the timing being off.

Remove the plugs. Spin the engine with starter. Did you get evidence of a fuel mist? Then it isn't fuel either.

Maybe try two new lead plugs. Remove the fuel pumps elect plug to keep any more fuel from getting in the way.

Remove the old lead plugs and spin the engine to clear the engine.

Install the two new lead plugs. Spray starter fluid into the intake filter for one or two seconds and then try to start the engine. Try at least a couple of times. If it showed signs of wanting to start, reinstall the fuel pump plug and try again.

If earlier, when you had the two lead plugs out and spun the engine with the fuel pump still connected, and you did not get a fuel mist/smell, then jumper the fuel pump check connector and listen for the pump running when the key is to ON.

The cas.........make sure the crank shaft pulley marks are aligned first then make sure the cas alignment marks are aligned prior to installing the cas. You probably did that. Just in case.

Just in case.......if you have the pulley aligned with the mark, and have the black cover taken off the top of the cas, then if your internal gears in the cas look like the placement of the ones in the jpg I'm attaching.....the timing is pretty much spot on. At least as close as you can get without a timing light.

Pay no attention to the lack of a cinch bolt/nut to hold it down. That jpg was done on a scanner.

thanks for the advice i think i might try to take a ride to my garage real quick and try those few things. i definitly have the case and gear aligned for the cas. what still gets me is the fact that i dont get the good strong spark when i use the key to crank the engine. i only get a real good spark when i run a wire directly to the starter. however....even if i bypass the starter it should still fire over providing i have fuel, spark and compression correct??? just wanted to be sure i wasnt bypassing another circuit by jumping the starter. ill let you know what i find out tonite.

thanks for the help
