Pilot Bearing this SMALL!?!?! Really?

Maybe this is just life's cruel game with me but is a pilot bearing really this small? Notice the very common nickel as comparison. Pilot seal to the left, pilot bearing in the middle and i have no idea what the metal donut is for. I'm about to drop a tranny and spend hours of work for this? Damn, what I failed to realise is that this is IN MY FACE!

p.s. what is the large metal ring for? it came with the pilot bearing.

Yeah, some aren't very big. You need to check it before you install it. When the trans is out, make sure it fits over the input shaft snugly, yet still spins easy. Then make sure it's a good press fit in the crank.

If you drop the tranny, I would replace the rear engine seal at the same time, and probably the rear tranny seal.
BTW, do you have a tool to remove the old pilot bearing? It's not as easy as you might think.

I think the metal donut is the thrust bearing, that I cant tell for sure from that pic.
And yes, they are small. It doesn't even fit around my pinkey finger.

well, i'm going to take my chances with the parts store rental and the shop i'm going to do the work in (i'm military) has their own pilot removal tool.

as far as the pilot bearing failing, i'm having alot of trouble shifting into gear, both stationary and cruising. (yes i've checked my hydraulics) but i'm also going to change my T/O bearing, pilot, rear seal, front tranny seal and lube it with grease.

when i got my motor(JDM), i purchased an ACT clutch thinking i would have to replace it. to my surprise, i found an O.S. Giken twinplate clutch system sitting on the motor!! i was so excited that my dumbass put my tranny back on w/o replacing any of these parts at all. this was over two years ago. it shifted smooth and great, but little by little (two years) it started to get rough. most of the symptoms i'm having are leading to these parts that i'm about to replace. if i do all this and its still a problem then its obviously my tranny, but i highly doubt that's the culprit.

metal donut= thrust bearing? is that what it is?

The one in the middle is the pilot bearing.

The one on the left is a dust cover for it I think. It has been a while since I did my stuff, but I think I put the thing on the left in front of the bearing to keep dust out.

I think it just barely fit over.

Bearing is bad if:
1. It makes grinding noises when you move it by hand.
2. It is heat scored.
3. when you remove the input shaft all kinds of little metal pieces fall out.

Harbor Freight Tools sells a great little pilot bearing removal tool. It's less than sixteen dollars. You have to grind the feet down a small amount so it will fit inside the bearing. But, then it is perfect. It takes me less than five minutes to remove pilot bearings now.
