ok curious:
Aren't you suppose to have a heat sheild around the turbo? And second thing: I know it's not probably that purple, just what your camera made it out to be, but..... what causes the turbo to "glow" so dark/colorful/whatever?

my turbo does that and more. I have had mine glowing half way down the down pipe. Oh yeah and the passagers feet were burning because this dunb chick took her shoes off. Not sure why that gets so hot but it can't be good.

I have seen other turbos glow purple too... one was a supra. I dont know if it is the camera or the turbo but it does look a little different.

I dont think its possbile for a turbo to glow purple, it must be the camera. I must say that looks ******* cool though. Isint a glowing turbo a sign of the mixture being too rich?

Digital cameras pick up the infrared as violet.
Try taking a picture of a heating element on a stove. Or an infrared LED (remote control, etc).
Does the same thing.

I'm pretty sure that a glowing turbo is not really a good thing. Just think about if it's getting that damn hot on the outside imagine how hot it is on the inside, that's not something I would want to put my turbo through. I really think that this is not something to just joke around with I think you need to do something about it. First one reason it may be getting so hot is from restrictions in exhaust, ie cats, second of all my guess is you are probably running pretty rich, that would most likely be the main cause of it getting so hot, because fuel is burning in the turbo. Maybe I'm wrong about turbos glowing, but I would still think you should at least consider doing something about it.

coincidentaly the turbo probably has traces of potassium (K) or Cesium (Cs). When the atom's electrons get excited by the intense heat they "jump" an energy level. When they fall back down to their ground state, they emit light (both K and Cs emit violet wavelenghts).
Either that or a really screwed digital camera
