This whole thread cracked me up...
Like Evil started alluding to, considering you have a big flapper door that is sprung in your airstream, I really don't think the transition in you tid adapter is gonna make one bit of difference, you'd be better off doing the throttle body mod than chasing the far end of a fart getting a transitioned cone adapter piece, and considerin the circular area of the actual cone is far greater than the square of the afm, worrying about angular surfaces, is splitting hairs..
The funnier thing is that looking at some cone intake tests in Sport compact and Turbo magazine, the whole damn kits maybe gave a 1-1.5 hp increase, so the HKS adapter is worth what? .001 or .003 hp?
Do it right and get a rid of the AFM altogether..Max

No offense, but that's a pretty irrelevant comment. We're talking about a $20 adaptor, you're suggesting a $1500-$2000 ECU set-up instead. It's about making what you've got work as well as it can.

I'm glad i read this thread cuz i've been wondering about that square box and if there was a way around it.

So i guess there is not unless you go buy a haltech.

No aftermarket AFM's that flow better than factory out there? Or would that get close to the price of a haltech? (1300)

Actually I think its a very relevent comment, if you read his mod list in his first post, he is really at the point that he could use a stand alone ecu, he has no real control over the timing, he has a hybrid turbo, he's running chips which never ever really match the car they get put into unless they are burnt real time on a dyno with the car they are going into, and if you make on change to the car after that you are hooped..
Even an E-manage would be a decent enough upgrade, then he could probably switch to a hotwire or a cone style as it lets you do that or go for a microtech and run that.. 1st gen wolf 3d's are pretty cheap these days, a full blow haltech is no more than 1200.00..
I think transitions in the cone adapter are the least of this guys worries, he's really close to hitting the end of the line on the stock ecu..Max

I agree that $20 was well-spent. However, the E6K is down to $1155 at the RX-7 Store, and the S-AFC, ECU chip, and AFR gauge could be sold to offset a lot of the cost.

BTW, why don't you keep the old filter adapter, and try it out on the dyno sometime to see what kind of difference it makes in the power curve? I think it would be an interesting experiment, and it would only take a few minutes to swap out.

That would be interesting.. If I think of it when I get to 'dyno time' I will do that for sure.. I love ***** N giggles. Its got my attention.

I have seriuosly considered a stand alone ECU .. but I need a paint job & new leather seats to complete this thing. And both of those are pricey I might get a standalone after I complete the cosmetics. For right now it should perform pretty well, I worked alot with sergio @ EL proto when I had my ECU programed. I sent him a FULL 4 page typed spec sheet of my mods including port size and picture of the internal & port upgrades. So, in theroy the programed ECU should be as close as I can get without a stand alone .. and should really be a improvment from the 1988 program. I have not added anything to the car that I did not list on the ECU spec sheet.

I can't wait to get on the dyno ... I will try out alot of things .. and get before specs.. of this ECU .. and someday after specs with a stand alone. But it will be a while till I can dyno .. car is going back together on the weekend following August 7th. But I gotta break it in before I can Dyno

But you can bet I will keep you all abreast of the hapenings

Yeah I know, but I didn’t know if he could install it himself, and I know you should factor in some dyno time, so I just threw up a number. Your basic price is still 58 times more expensive than the adaptor!
I like the dyno test idea. Measuring pressure drops through the intake system is easy to do also.

Ahh common now! Gimmie some credit. I know I could install it myself.. Every single Mod in my signature besides the ECU burn .. I have done myself. I have not payed for 1 man Hr. I did the full rebuild myself, every Apex, Side Seal & gasket. Even new bearings. I even did the porting myself (with templates) I know I would need tuner help on the dyno .. but i could install the thing blind folded with one arm tied behind my back

EDIT: Opps I forgot .. BNR did the turbo upgrade.
