anyone who has polished their rims, do you put any kind of protective coating or compound on them, or just keep them really clean?

I have these same stock wheels on my 89 GTU. After seeing the picture of the car in the 89 sales brochure I thought about polishing mine after I got it repainted. I like the wheels but after polishing they look so much nicer. The guy that did the paint job for me said that they would eventually dull due to the heat from the brakes and it would not be worth the time and effort to do the polishing. He said you would have to remove the clear coat, a though job, and recoat the wheels after you completed polishing.

Those wheels really look nice polished. Let me know if you have any problems after you get them back on the car and run them for awhile.
