Pics of my external wastegate on stock s4 turbo, tial 38mm :D

and now pictures from another friend of mine who's helping me out w/ my overhaul, elliot. www.turblown.net

heres my solution to boost creep w/ the s4 hybrid. garrets old hybrid turbo btw. its a h-trim.

http://www.pbase.com/meanrex/externally_wg...hybrid_s4_turbo

elliot decided where to mount the wg, punched the hole, and is doing all of this work, along w/ rebuild my turbo and coating my turbo, turbo manifold, downpipe, and intake manifolds. on all of the parts involved w/ intake air get ceramic on the outside, teflon like coating on the inside. all exhaust parts get ceramic both inside and out. hopefully this will really help w/ controlling the heat and saving some rubber hoses and my paint and intake temps as well as i can from here on.

im going w/ all the facotry accessories and "full" emissions. so its gonna sitll be crowded as **** in the engine bay, keeping the stock fan and shroud too.

Lemme know what you think? I just saw these pics and am happy. looks like boost creep will be no problemo

w/g is a tial 38mm, like roths/g-rats/ryans car has duals of.

I dunno if I've seen this on a stock manifold for a t2 before. I wouldnt doubt its been done. But I can't think of any, just the jap ext wg thats actually the plate on the turbo that covers the int w/g. not really like this.

More to come, thanks to Glen (azrotaryrockets.com) and E (turblown.net) and a few other friends from phoenix making this work w/ me out of state.
Rotorheads truely are most of my good friends.

yeah its been done

But yours is much nicer than mine (was) I used an audi wastegate that was 32mm

No boost creep here

IMHO going with this type of setup on a factory turbo is FAR superior to wastegate porting, however a proper porting job will "git er done"

Also, mine was open dump....FAWKIN loud baby - haha

very nice! thats a great idea.... gotta love the sound of a wastegate being dumped into the atmosphere! my 50mm wastegate is being plumbed to exit the passengerside wheel well... cant wait to see the huge flame shooting out the side of my car

Unfortuneatly hes got to have it recirculated, and hidden in such a way that the smog **** in CA can't see or hear it. Obviously there is a much better way to route the discharge, but it would be visible. Regardless it should work a 1000x better than the stock unit..

would you weld the flapper from the wastegate actuator since its not in use anymore?

Looks good, but I hope you're not going to stab the wastegate pipe into the main exhaust pipe like that. Two gas flows meeting at a right angle like that will create a lot of turbulence, which restricts flow. It's better to have a longer wastegate pipe that flows into the main pipe at a smoother angle.

Yup. I also tigged my flapper door closed on the inside as well as tacked the external part of the actuator to the housing.

Then you can ditch the actuator all together.

I can't see how Node has his taken care of, plus that might just be a mock-up turbo.

Good work! Most of the time when I see an external wastegate on the stock turbo they've just ran a pipe from the turbine housing out...This looks much better.

good point on the 90 angle

and yes, i believe elliot already welded the old falpper door shut. But maybe that still needs to be done. Not positive.

Glad to see everyone likes it.

Now that is one thing I was defineatly going to avoid. Seeing as the s4 exhaust manifold is already " log" style and there is plenty of " turbulence" there, not to mention the exhaust gases are increasing their speed tremendously in the turbine runners.

Unfortuneatly I did already finish the w/g dump tube in that position. I would be very hard to hide otherwise, and I didn't want to go any lower than the downpipe sat already. There really isn't that much exhaust coming out versus the downpipe anyhow, just watch an open dump on the dyno. Anyhow I almost always recirculate atleast 15" from the turbine and cut a u-bend at such an angle so there are no right angles like you said Aaron. However @ $150 a piece, 321 .105" wall U bends aren't cheap...

put a sharp bend on that recirc tube. dont recirculate it back into the downpipe like that.
