Isn't the 88 GTU (ie not 1989+) one of the rarest 2nd gens, even rare than the GTU-S??

Thanks
BTW - I about busted a gut laughing when I saw the GTU-S has the hatch cover snaps but no hing holes in the speakers for the hatch cover.
I knew the GTU-S was almost hand assembleled with parts from other models, but I had no clue they kept the GXL/TII interior
Love all "little" differences - like :'
- the 88 vs 89 TII console lips,
- airbag convertible levers vs non airbag handle controls
- airbag vert top retractor replaces the security light on the armrest console (non airbag's on the wheel console),
- 88 "sink down" hatch cover vs 89+ "stick up" hatch cover
- slightly smaller 88 nose
- square 88 vs round 89 side mirror holes
- 5 (count em) different OEM rear spoilers
- 2 different sideskirs OEM
- 3 different OEM front lips
- mudflaps, glass moonroof,
- 89+ 2+2 option (love to see this still)
- cloth vs vinal tops (oem cloth??)
- 2 tone paintjob OEM (dealer??)
and how many seat types, wheels, and interior colors were there
and was their an 89+ lover/slotted glass cover option

The GTU was really a updated version of the 87-88 Sport. The GTUs was one step further.
Heavy duty suspension (like the T2 and 'vert), LSD, big brakes, Aero parts, but unlike the GTUs power windows were common, a sunroof was also common on the GTU.
The GTUs also came with the 16x7 wheels and a 4.3 final drive that the Sports and GTU never came with.
The GTUs was also more exclusive on build amounts, around 1000 for 89 and around 200 were made for 90.

GTU DOES have heavy duty suspension.. "sport tuned suspension" to be exact... i think thats what they call it, hell if i know, i just know its not the same as "regular" rex. I have an 88 GTU and mine came with sunroof (i want a damn glass one if anyone just happens to have one laying around, hehe) and manual locks/windows. And.. with every Rex... SHITTY fragile interior.

Sorry I wasn't clear,
Both the 88 GTU and the 89-90 GTUs (as well as the 'Verts w/o AAS, the 86-87 Sport/GS and the T2) all had the heavy duty-sport tuned suspension.
The GTUs just didn't come with the heavy stuff like a sunroof or power window options that the GTU sometime came with.

Kind of like the Infini Turbo II's. Totally stripped down, nothing that wasn't necessary to make the car go, stop, or turn better. The GTUs is the NA RX7 at its best.

Hey, can I ask a semi-related question? I got a 1991 n/a. I was told that in 91 they no longer had GTU/GXL classifications...just an A and B model. Is this accurate? I got the vented rotors and 4 piston calipers as well as sunroof, and power door and windows.
It just bugs me a little that I cant call my car anything but "n/a".

There was just the T2, The coupe, and the Convertible in 91/92.
Sounds like you have a fairly rare coupe though if it has 4 piston front brakes. Not too many coupes had them from the factory in 91
