Performance and exhaust question(s).
I have an 86 GXL powered by an 88 engine and computers(as if that makes any differance). My buddy has an 88 GXL. He recently changed his exhaust to a 3" straight pipe from the reactor to the Y pipe. His mufflers have been changed to a higher flow design also.He still has the stock airbox , etc. The only modification I have made to mine is to gut the main cat. I also have my heater core bypassed(does that matter?) and air taken out. Before either of us changed anything about our cars , they would run dead even. Now with the mods he has made I would expect his car to be faster, but we still run dead even. Why would I still be just as fast?

Well, even though your buddy "freed" up his exhaust flow a bit, he is still running the factory air box. From what I hear those are very restrictive. He needs to put in an aftermarket air filter (IE: get rid of the factory air box) to get the full effect of his exhaust changes. As far as your car goes, did you remove the air conditioning compressor when you say you got rid of your A/C? If so that is sure to get rid of some drag that will definetly allow your car a few extra "horses" that that would otherwise be spent turning that thing over. Hope this helps.....

And unless you've both found an alternate method for opening up your six ports, you're both missing a lot of top end power. The '88 motor uses backpressure from the exhaust to open them, and with either a 3" pipe or a gutted cat, you won't generate enough backpressure. Check out this page from Travis Shrey's website on how to work the six ports. Don't tell your buddy, and you'll be able to kick his butt.

Both our 5-6 ports work just fine.He capped the end of his air feed for the cat and they actuate just fine.Mine never stopped working.
