Painting my 7

I'm thinking about doing all the prep work myself and then just spray some primer on it and maybe taking it to macco's (can't remember how to spell it) You know the cheap paint job for like $200. I've heard that all they do is just paint over the old paint and that is why it only last for about a year. So you think that if I do everything else myself that it might turn out pretty decent? Until I get all the other more important mods out of the way. Just so it looks better than the whole top fading and clear coat peeling? Let me know what you think

Is the quality of the paint they use crappy or just the way they just paint over the old paint and not stripping it down???

I have just had a professional paint job applied to my '91 GXL.

I watched the process completely.

The paint is of no consequence.
(as long as its a good quality product to begin with)

You see the secret to good long lasting paint, is the condition of the metal and the primer.

No fingerprints.
No foreign material in the primer.
No oils of any kind on the metal.

This is the time consuming part.
90% of the time is in the prep.

It took 6 weeks to get the car perfect.
then one day to paint.

You see what i mean?

You'll get what you put into it. a 200$ paint job is a $200 paint job. If the car's paint is peeling, cloudy, and looks hideous, but you can't afford to spend 1500 on a super sweet paint job, the 200 can look better than it did.

For example, my car here is a 250$ paint job from Miracle Auto Painting in Napa, CA.

It's a racers special, but it doesn't look bad at all. I wouldn't have them paint my Trans Am, but my Suburban's going there.

that's pretty good for $250. Did you have to do any of the prep work yourself. I don't really see any/much overspray, but why is your windshield cloudy? Don't tell me they painted that.
