Paint Prep

Paint Prep
I will be getting my FC painted soon and would like some pointers on how to prep it. I was told by an auto body shop to use 550 grit intially, and then move to 600 or finer, I have alot of 220 laying around and would like to use that, and then move up. I have yet to call the body shop to confrim this but any pointers would help.

My friend just repainted his, and here's what he did. He used 600 grit I believe -- sanded down twice with that. Then the car was sanded down using 1000-1200 grit sandpaper, twice. Then, the dents were grinded down to the bare metal, and sanded, then filled, and sanded with 1000-1200 grit. Repeat those steps [without the grinding] until the surface imperfections are pretty much gone. Then the car was wet-sanded using 2000 grit I think once, then sprayed with primer, sanded, primer, sanded, etc.. until as close to perfection as possible is obtained. Then the car was wetsanded twice with 2500 grit until it was as smooth as a babies bottom. Then paint. That should give a near perfect exterior.
I don't know if that's the professional method, or if it's too involved, or whatever -- it made the car with the new paint look perfect. That's what matters.

I was going to buy a orbital sander to do it. I just hope it doesn't leave swearl marks.

What were you wanting to know about prep-work? Did I answer your question?

Cool, Yes you answerd my question, Just wonderd about the powersander to save time. At most I do not want to do a half assed job on the car. And it looks like I will have to hand sand it. Thanks for the help.

Random Orbital Sander is what you need. The paint store will sell the sanpaper for that in rolls of 50 or more. You want to gradually increase the grit start with around 400 depending on how deep your sratches and dings are and finish with 800 to 1000. Some of the small corners and crevices you have to do by hand but of big flat surfaces you will get better results with the orbital sander (round 6in).
