Question p/s line that runs in front of oil cooler

This steel line for the p/s fluid cracked (upper line where it's held by the bracket) last fall. Not wanting to go through the headache of replacing it, I rigged what I thought was a solid patch.

Well, the damn thing's leaking again.

So I'm looking at the line. It runs out in front of the oil cooler and then back again in a kind of flat loop. And my first thought is, Why? Does anyone know why it's set up like this? To cool the p/s fluid?

Could I just cut out the loop and run a connecting piece of either steel or hose to the ends (after flaring them) without causing problems?

No, you'll overheat the fluid.
