Cool overheating madness extravaganza! 5000

88 GXL... Lets start from a REALLY odd point of view with me.. ONE NIGHT.. i was driving back from the otherside of orlando FL. car seem to be ok, felt Slightly Ruff.. when i got it home.. cut it off, she Smelled hot but the Dash thermo said " hey all's good in the hood sir" till later that night i go back out, start the car. and start Pluming white smoke.. NOW.. it no longer Blooms white smoke.. after a day of sitting.. no Water in the Oil none of that fun crud.. the smoke did smell of coolant however...

Assuming whatever that madness was is over..
i have another issue, May be the thermostat ( unsure) But if i fill the system with coolant.. get all the air out and let it run.. it will start pushing Coolant out of the overflow, thought this might be a Cap issue, bought a new cap, someone pointed out the lip in the fill neck was not lvl or some jazz, and replaced the Radiator.. Hoses and so on.. WOULD A stuck Thermo Do the Above?

When cold
holds water
runs awesome

when upto Temp.
Dumps from the overflow ( light but steady flow)
Gets low Coolant Alarm
over heats
has pressure in the system for about 5 mins.. then dies out

Went as far as Replacing the top fill neck and cap. any help would be AWESOME..

but.. i have a bad feeling on this as well

Do the bubble/champagne test

with a cold car, remove the pressure cap on your fill neck, look for bubbles, if you've bled the system of air and still get foam/bubbles/gushing then you are looking at a rebuild.

white smoke doesn't have to be present, even when cold my last motor would just smell sickly disgustingly diabetically sweet. Just lean over next to your bumper and use your hand to waft some of the exhaust smell very briefly into your nose. Don't stick your face in it.

Honestly with the information you've provided it sounds like you're looking at a rebuild.

One of the better contributors to the forum has a pretty great site dedicated to the FC. here's his cooling section.

The factory coolant temp gauge is mediocre at best, it's a common recommendation to install a aftermarket gauge

from you're description i'd say 99% you're correct.

exhaust doesn't plume white smoke for no reason then go away ***** nilly without a problem still being present in these engines. sounds like a cracked iron.

after a drive i have to check the coolant level and add some coolant .. so im guessing coolant is going into my motor cause i see no leaks or any crack on the hose

ignore white smoke and overheating. Run a hose from your overflow bottle's outlet to outside your hood.
Tell everyone it is steam powered whenever nothing but exhaust gasses are spewing out of the aforementioned hose.
