Unhappy Overheating - Is Engine toast or possible coolant leak

Hey Guys,

Here is the deal yesterday I was going to work and i noticed my temp gauge going up after i got off the freeway. I coasted to work about 2 min off the ramp. There was no smoke or anything else. The temp gauge just started to rise. I pop the hood and see all my coolant going back to the overflow tank. So I let everything sit for a while then put water and antifreeze back in. start it up runs fine doesn't smoke. About 10 mintues of drving under 4k i notice temp started going up again. pop hood same deal coolant overflowing from tank again. felt top hose not hot its actually kinda cold. Radiator cap was replaced as well as the radiator. I just parked it and got a ride home and I have a flat bed picking it up today and its going to Fast Freddys. I'm really stressing right now because i don't want to get a rebuild right now. So again guys its tough love time. I'm i just wishful thinking here or is the car just toast..... Help

That sounds like plain ol' overheating - when the car overheats, the coolant boils, and the increase in pressure makes it boil out to the overflow tank.

I'd start with a new thermostat (use a Mazda thermostat ONLY) and check for coolant leaks. It's likely something simple.

Good thing you shut it down when you did - that's the way to do it.

There are many things that can be causing it to overheat. Have the place you take it to perform a pressure test of the cooling system, just to make sure you don't have any leaks. Could be the thermostat, clutch fan, or radiator cap causing it to overheat. Or it could be a bad radiator or water pump or bad hoses that are caving in.

I am fixing my 87' because of the same thing.

I tested my rad cap and thermostat and both were bad. Replaced both and it still didn't fix it. So I replaced a grip of hoses. Still didn't fix it.

Turned it over a few times... and watched for coolant...

ahah... the gaskets on my water pump are shot. So I would definately check the small things first... I had already been told several times that it was a water seal, and it needed a rebuild.

Thanks for the repsonse guys you've made me feel alittle better. I'll have fast freddys do the pressure test on my coolant system and go from there. If its a easy fix then I'll thank the rotary gods and have a renewed respect for my car. If not i'll be in a bad mood all day and will be sending an email to rotary res to get a new engine... I knew i was gonna need a new engine sooner or later... I was just hoping for later. Pray to the rotary god for me guys

Yeah, sometimes Mazda made a mistake here or there. The OEM stuff may be alright for up north and ****, but come down to the south where you can litterally fry breakfast on the pavement and you'll want another thermostat. Rotorific's temp gauge never even gets to 1/4ths of the way up, just beutiful.

i have all the belts that are suppose to be there. The car is at the shop now. I had it towed yesterday. I'll know something today. Fingers are crossed that they don't say water 0 ring failure.

Bzzt.

EVERY parts store thermostat I've seen has failed within a few MONTHS. So, the car is overheating, and you put in a new thermostat. All is better. Problem happens again a few months later - your first guess is "well, it can't be the thermostat, it's gotta be something else, I just changed that". Been there, done that.

My white car, with a front mount intercooler, stock radiator, and Mazda thermostat runs 1/4 of the temp gauge ALL the time.

If there's a better aftermarket part, I'm the first to jump on it. But, this is an exception - Mazda just gets good thermostats. They will last for YEARS.

I can't stress this enough - the cooling system is VITAL on a rotary. You MUST use a Mazda thermostat - anything else is looking for trouble.

Hmm im not gonna disagree on that but ive had my thermostat for over 6 months and im still happy with it I think that there are alot of things that you have to buy from mazda to get quality but then again somethings you dont....

i'm with this guy. i have some napa stat in there and changed my coolant. not one problem since i've had the car about 6 months. can't complain yet, i just hope it doesn't overheat on me at some point. also the temp gauge barely creeps off the line on cold nights and just below the all mighty quarter mark on regular days.

UPDATE

Hey guys i guess the engine did blow. Nick from Fast Freddy's said I have a leak on the exhaust side of the combustion chamber. So i'll need a rebuild I've decided to just go ahead and get it done. I really don't want to have to buy a new car. Plus i can just get the racing sleeves and all that good stuff.
