Talking Open headers, Holy sh*t

I ran my car open headers to see what it sounded like. **** that is loud. My friend with a '69 camaro thought his car open headers was louder, so I took my car for a drive to his house. I shifted at about 2,300 rpms because it was so loud and coasted whenever possible. Everyone was looking at me, probably in a 3 block radias. When I got to my friends house, I shut it off and he came out, along with some of his neighbors. He said it shook his house like crazy. The neigbors kept looking around to see what car had made all that noise, so when I left, I stepped on it and redlined first and second. After getting home and putting my exhaust back on, my friend called and said like 6 cop cars came by looking for me. Open headers is a little to loud for the street, but when I go to the track I going to run them open.

Thumbs up lol

That's crazy!

I did the same thing with mine. You'll go deaf after a while unless you die of carbon monoxide poisoning first!

Way to show those domestic boys what's up!

Thank you

Is a rotary with open headers really all that loud?

I was thinking get some headers (with dual outlets)

and run a pipe to each side of the car. One pipe for each rotor. Would it be completly unstreetable?
I love the sound of rotary's and i'm curious.

Headers and pipe is way to loud for the streets. Idle with open headers was probably louder the Cali. 95 Decibel limit.

Find a jackhammer and use it on your head. Thats what open headers sounds like on a rotary.

Well, I ran /w open manifold today after reinstalling the trans. At idle it shakes the windows of the house. At redline, everyone for at least 3 blocks must hav eheard it. It got my neighbor fromo 2 blocks down to come see whats up (hes a car junkie too.)

I took it for a short drive to the exhaust shop to get the exhuast fixed and they couldn't do it till tomorrow. So hesitantly i took it about town redlining all the time. Until the exhuast hanger (yes.. a coat hanger) flew apart and we dragged the exhaust 10 miles back home b/c the car is to low to reach anything under it.

The car in reality, even with straight pipes is incredibly unacceptible. You *cannot* hear someone speak to you unless they are yelling in your direction if you are above 3000rpm.

I love the loud sound, yes its deffinately aggressive, but innoway streetable in my mind. This is my everyday driver, and i can't even hear the radio when its on as loud as it will go.

Peace out guys.

What's kind of ironic is how many of us had exhaust work done today. I had my toasted edelbrock removed and a glasspack thrown in there to get me by untill I can figure out what I really want to do with this thing.

Had them install it backwards (louvers aimed out the back) to hopefully prevent the thing from blowing out all the glass. It's not as deep of a tone anymore, and idle is a little louder, but its quieter untill 5K than it had been.

There was some crackhead in the exhaust shop when we were fitting up the glasspack saying "oh who needs it? Just run the rear muffler" so I asked the guy to lower my car so I could rev it up for him. (after many contorted faces as he was boasting that he knew it wasn't possibly that loud) Even the guys at the shop were like "dudes on crack, this thing is ******* nutzo loud without a working mid muffler"

Well, they wouldn't drop the lift and the guy was still there when I pulled her out of the shop so I looked straight at him and took it to 7500. Blew all the dirt across the shop floor. (being an extra 8" above it on the lift) The shop guys thought I just puffed out the `pack in a single blow. (but, it turned out to just be the dirt) the doubtful guy's face looked shocked and his shoulders crunched in from the noise. Both the guys at the shop grinned and I gently backed her off the ramps. Keep in mind this is with a 12x14' garage door wide open and the tip aimed out the door... with full exhaust on the car.

Open headers is so god damn loud. I ran uncollected road racing headers about two miles down to the ehxaust shop on the highway just a couple weeks ago. People would cringe as I passed them. I experienced pain threshold in my ears trying to get to 3K. Any more than that it would hurt horribly. I think I made it to 4500 for grins.

When I got there it had destroyed a couple of the headshields under the car. Turned them brittle like foil and discoloured them. They drooped from the screws holding them in place.

Kenteth is totally right about the straight pipes.

I had straight pipes for a while.
You can see them here:
http://www.negative.ph/exhaust2.jpg

That was WAY to loud. I put a muffler on at the end, after the merge collector. STILL TOO LOUD. Car is ri-god-damn-diculous right now.

I am competing in the SPL category at our local SOLO II. There's this 240Z with a 3" straight pipe that is about as loud as my car was with a straight pipe. Horrible horrible.

Relisys190, you will make it to end of your block. Then you will be thinking, this kinda sucks. My ears were ringing for hours that ride. At least with straight pipes the sound is behind you, so it's not too bad.

So when I drive my open header to the exhaust shop I should wear some earplugs and maybe my motorcycle helmet? I want to have someone ride with me and video tape the ppl that I pass and get all the looks that I will get
