Sealant works if you use it properly. Most people don't realize that the typical RTV product can't have full torque applied until it cures.
However, if you use permatex rightstuff, you can apply this RTV like product and torque it immediately and be on your way. This is what i have used on several cars.

I have been doing it that way since I've been working on cars and never had one leak...but then again, I'm methodical in what I do.
Think about it, by adding a gasket in the middle, you are trying to seal 4 surfaces instead of two.

I don't know why , but both Honda and Toyota sealants are superior to Permatex. I have used both on like branded applications without gaskets with no problems. That said, I have also used gaskets with RTV on both sides for many years on other applications. I can' think of how many Front covers, Oil pans, Intakes, and Water Pumps I've sealed this way in the past that did not leak.

I will be sure to look up HondaBond when I do need a sealant. Where do you get yours at? Honda dealership?

Please don't group all products that Permatex makes into one. Regular RTV is not idiot proof and requires following the instructions.
However, rightstuff is about as foolproof as you can get and has NEVER leaked on me. I have used it on oil pans, transmissions, valve cover gaskets, water pumps, thermostat housings etc.... It has never given me any problems. I even used it on my 84 Honda when i had to split the engine case to replace a T&*()_)*&^&*()ing broken starter clutch.
http://www.permatex.com/right_stuff/right_stuff1.asp is the website for it and you can get it at any NAPA store. You can torque up to 100% immediately and drive your car after 15 minutes. No other RTV sealant that I know of is as easy to use and RELIABLE.
Oh, its not only on my 91 Vert's oil pan but I also used this stuff on my front cover, water pump and a couple of other places that I can't remember. Not a single oil or coolant leak.
Next week I'm pulling my tranny off of my 2004 VW so I can add a taller 5th gear for better fuel economy. Guess what I'm using instead of gaskets to put it ball back together? Yep, rightstuff.
