Ok so i need a new catback...
Ok here's what my exhaust system has got so far.
Racing beat streetable collected header to a Racing beat presilencer followed by the factory Y-pipe to the factory mufflers.
Now i don't think the mufflers or Y-pipe have any rusted holes in them and they are in pretty good condition, but with the headers on and cat removed, they sound like total ***. 3k+ rpms and they sound like they are going to explode or something and I'm sure that these 14 yr-old muffs will get holes blown in them with enough backfiring.
Now here's what I've noticed about this setup. With the addition of the header and presilencer there was a healthy pickup in performance, even with the stock catback, so I am assuming that the exhaust manifold and precat/cat were a MAJOR restriction, much more so than the catback.
What I want: I want a system that isn't going to scream "holy **** that's loud as hell!" I want it to have more of a rumble at low rpm. Loud at WOT at higher revs is fine since there is no way around that . This pretty much rules out most N1 style mufflers since they are loud as all hell. I have been told HKS and Racing Beat are good options, but I really really dont want to drop ~600 bucks+ on a cat-back setup. Basically since this car is daily driven I want something not super loud, doesn't sound like ***, and won't burn a hole in my wallet.
What I am considering so far:
the Dynomax Catback dual muffler setup made for our cars (summit has them listed at 295)
the Borla Catback single muff dual exit made for our cars (seen it listed at 369)
some cheapo mufflers like the BOMZ Evo's with silencers and getting them welded in at a shop (~140 for 2x muffs + labor for weld and y-pipe)
Anyone have any other suggestions besides these or any comments on the systems I have listed or anything else contained therein? Lemme know.
thanks in advance for any help,
Scott

bingoboy you want exactly what I want. If it werent for the loudness of the true duals (still have not heard them in person) I would buy them. All I want is noticable performance gain without it being crazy loud. An exhaust setup that is loud when I want it to be and quiet for cruising to not cause the wrong kind of attention.

I must also add that I got the header and presilencer used for a very nice price so you guys don't think I dropped 400 bucks on them and wanna skimp out on the catback . Only picked them up cuz they were at a good price, but now that I've got them I need the new catback ASAP

Read my RB header-magnaflow thread. A cheap colected exhaust is way WAY louder than True Duals.

The racing beat is the quietest . . I would go for that one if I had no cat. Or you could just go to Summit and get a Dynomax like you were saying to me in emails

I would look for low mileage stock mufflers since they're nice and quiet even with header and pre-sliencer. RB catback only put out 5 hp over stock (turbo applications, so could be less for NA).

im tellin ya if u want noticable gain and VERY good sound go Dynomax. ever heard of the expression "u get what u pay for" " u go cheap ur gettin cheap", it worth it in the end =p
but whatever that my opinion i luv my baby so its gets what it likes!! =D
BTW did u know that Dynomax is the official exhaust system of NASCAR (used to help generate 800hp to the wheels), that should say something!! think about it!!

The stock Y-pipe isnt as restrictive as everyone thinks, when I switched to a wider pipe, I noticed no power gains at all, but this is on my butt dyno/drag strip experiences. The mufflers though are pretty bad. Any of you ever opened one up?
You might aswell go to a muffler shop and get them to make you a Y-pipe, and get some aftermarket mufflers to go with it. Not bling-bling, and a little off map, but the power increase will be about the same.

Wow... can't remember the last time a racing organization was concerned with sound muffling
And advising people to not go cheap when you yourself bought the cheapest commercially available exhaust for your FC... well... Pot... Kettle... Black.

And there's no need for flaming. There are low ends and high ends to everything. The difference between a ford escort and a lincoln navigator, so to speak.
