is the oil seal toast on my turbo?

so i finnally got this turbo put in i bought from another forum member and today i was finnally able to start it...
i pulled the EGI fuse and cranked it untill the guage read oil pressure...from the moment i started it and let it run for 20-30 minutes i watched oil spew from the back of the turbo and from near the bolts on the hotside...smoke came from the turbo itself as well..
i recently installed a new oil drain which was WAY better then my last one and installed a oil restrictor pill rated for the turbo....
so my assumption is that the oil seal is toast?
should i run it for a little longer tommorow to see if excess oil was stuck in the turbo??
i installed it a week ago without a restrictor pill and it did the same thing..i just thought that it was oil burning that was left over in the turbo but im pretty sure it wasnt..
maybe tommorow ill take pics and show you what im talking about

you can see the oil coming out..its most likely a bad seal right? plugs are drie..never did this before...drove it 1 week ago and it didnt smoke half this bad with other turbo

Pffft.. I have TWO turbos with bad seals that I've bought trying to get my conversion done... comparitively, tha's alot less smoke than mine was putting out. I filled up the entire town square on my way home the first day I ran the turbo.

Needless to say, I'm back to NA again =(... but I was thinking of giving the oil restrictor a try on my next turbo. Mine have all been stock though, so I don't understand why they wouldn't hold up to stock oil pressure...

I had the same problem when I put in my JSpec TII engine. Thought the seals were bad but I let it run for a while at idle and took it for a couple drives and the smoke eventually subsided. Mine would only smoke at high RPM when the turbo spooled up so that is most likely the seals.

Try and remove the oil fill cap temporarily.
If this "solves" the problem, them you have a crankcase venting problem.

If the oil continues to leak back there, then the turbine compression ring is toast.

Damn, you got really bad luck with turbos!

thanks, ill give it a try..but when i had my other turbo on it didnt smoke like this..i had SOME smoke @ start up in the mornings with the old one but i can watch the oil bubble from the housing now...and since its a 6 port turbo i have the oil drain going to the oil pan...i ran the oil drain better than before...
before i had the stock oil drain coming from the turbo welded the stock oil drain end that used to attach to the motor and turned it dowmwards THEN i had a flange from ATPturbo with the fittings and a -10 AN oil drain then to the oil pan....
NOW its just the -10 AN straight from the turbo to the oil pan..
i modified the stock oil drain since i couldnt fit the flange directly to the turbo by welding a 1/2 piece of pipe about 2 inches out form the turbo...here is a picture

Damn, you got really bad luck with turbos!
i know it!! im about ready to just sell the damn car and be done with it!!..LOL

tried the oil fill cap and it made no difference...i can let it warm up and when i rev it up some smoke just belows from the turbo itself....
maybe i fucked up on the drain...ill take a pic of it to and see you you people think?

i thought about switching the 45 elbow and putting it on the turbo and put the straight on the bottom attatched to another elbow? their is a slight kink on the first picture but could that really mess it up?
its hard to think that because its not kinked THAT bad..just slightly

Yeah, -10AN is kinda small.
I try to use minimum -12AN for the drain.
That 90-degree fitting is kinda iffy.
I try to use all straight fittings and use minimum amount of bends as possible.

Right now, it really looks like the turbine compression piston ring is bad.

::note to self, make sure you do your homework on someone before you buy something!!::

ripped it out AGAIN and this is whats left!!! i tell ya, i can rip a turbo out of these cars in about 10 minutes now!

these pictures really dont justify how much oil actually is in there!
