Oil pressure.

Alright. So i replaced my oil cooler lines with steel braided corksports sometime in mid june, after the guy i took it to finished i noticed that my cooler lines were slightly bent (even after i told him not to)

The car started up fine and the oil pressure gauge read as usual. Every now and then i'll notice that i have some oil drops under my car (nothing too large to worry about because i constantly check my oil) a few days ago i noticed that my oil pressure gauge wasnt reading normally and was dangerously lower than usual. After getting home i checked my oil to see that i was missing about a quart so i filled it up and went for a ride around my block. Everything checked out fine so i parked it and went inside. Today as i was driving i noticed that my oil pressure gauge was extremely low again (checked oil and levels were fine) I was driving on the highway doing maybe 60 and noticed that my oil pressure was showing 0 to maybe 5 and as i was going to get off the highway it went back up to normal.

Driving around today i noticed that sometimes it will sit at like 10 and sometimes it will act as usual.

usual

-idle 20-30psi
-4k rpm 60 psi
redline-90+psi

now

-idle sometimes it shows usual and sometimes it shows 0
-4k rpm 10psi to 50
havent redlined my car because i'm afraid of blowing the engine.

My oil pressure is erratic yet my temp gauge is fine soooo idk wtf is up.

opinions anyone? I'm thinking either my oil pump is going or my oil pressure gauge is loose or going or something like that.

Would you say the car is okay to drive? Should i premix as a precaution?

88 n/a GXL if it matter.

I'd guess the gauge sending unit is failing.

When stuff like this occurs always check for the easiest fixes such as disconnecting the connector to the sender, cleaning it up as well as possible and then reconnecting the plug after applying dielectric grease into the plug.

The oil pressure gauge is connected to the oil sending unit which is located on the drivers side of the engine. Looks like a bell below the air bypass valve and just to the left of the oil filter. It has a plug which slides off and since its location is under the oil filter pedestal it collects a lot of oily dirt which can interfere with the sending unit providing a proper signal to the gauge. So slide the plug off, clean and apply the grease and reconnect. Solved my problem which was very similar to yours.

My S5 has been doing the same thing recently and i been a little worried.

My oil pressure at idle is slightly before 30. but once its 100% warm the oil pressure drops, very close to 0 at idle. While cruising its around 50. Ive tried to clean the connection but maybe i did a poor job.

I know my S4 has way better oil pressure. This car runs and drives absolutely fine with no smoke issues or anything. Im running 10w30 with about 700miles on it in around 80 degree weather. Should i switch to 20w50? I really dont want this motor to get toasted.

Also how accurate is the stock oil pressure gauge on the S5? I know the temp gauge is crap.

Hello All!

So I had the same incident of low oil pressure, then after an oil change at a local shop it went to zero. I thought the sender had totally gone out, but found there was no wire attached to the sender at all.

In fact I could not find a loose or stray wire nearby in the engine compartment. Can someone take a picture of the oil sender wire and post it, so I can try to find this thing? Or maybe ask the shop if they found an errant wire after my oil change?

Thanks,
Matt

You guys really need to learn how to search. :-)

The oil pressure issue has been addressed way too much. There are tons of threads on it. It is usually the same issue-

Dirty connection, loose connection, wire came off, bad sending unit! An occasional bad gauge but not the norm.

When in doubt invest a couple of dollars and get a oil pressure tester!

http://www.harborfreight.com/engine-...kit-98949.html

Also in my signature is the link to the Factory Service Manual. Down load a copy. You will find the specs for the oil pressure in there plus it has the electrical diagrams telling you what wire goes to the sender. :-)
