Oil Cooler Flushing
I vaguely remember someone who had their oil cooler flushed and cleaned at a certified aircraft facility(I believe it was in TX) A search yielded nothing. I used to have the number and address for the guy but it is lost. any help?

Haven't we ALL heard this
That may have been some guy at a third gen site. I remeber reading that too. I took my 91 TII cooler to an aircraft repair facility (I drove it there). The main point is they know how to flush these things.
You MUST plug the hole that oil cooler thermostat plugs when it hits 140° F or so. IF you do not plug this hole you flush the end tank and that is it.

I did find United Accesories in Garland TX that will flush and test the operation of the Thermostat for ~115 + shipping. They are a FAA certified facility. Contact Gary Woodard @ 1-888-cooler2

I just happened to have the braided oil cooler lines with 10-AN lines, and an aeromotive fuel pump installed to my tank with 10-AN output. (removed the oil bypass of course) I hooked up the cooler directly to my fuel pump, and then installed my 10 micron pump onto the other fitting to the oil cooler. I took the hose from that and ran it back into my fuel filler door. Then I hooked the pump up to a spare battery on a charger, and left it for the night. The pump took my gasoline, ran it through my filter, into the pump, pumped it through my oil cooler, into another filter, and then back into the tank. Leaving it for about 12 hours, I pumped about 6000 L of gasoline through it. It was CLEAN.
A little bit screwy, but it worked phenomanally, and I did it when I was install my oil cooler lines, so it only cost my one night without the car.

I'm definitely a do-it-yourselfer.
Too bad it wouldn't work for everyone (I have kind of a unique fuel system setup), but it shouldn't be too hard to replicate.
Make sure you use a filter AFTER the oil cooler, to filter the gas going back into your tank. A generic $2 filter will work great here. I only used mine b/c it is an easy cartridge replacement, and it screwed right onto the fitting I had.
Yes, I replaced the cartridge after (It was BLACK, but no surprise, right?), and ran some brake cleaner through it (which came out clear), followed by some compressed air.

interesting technique scathcart, I'm not sure if I'll be able to use that method, does anyone else have another way to do it yourself?
Also, are there local places you can take it and have it done? how much would it cost do you think?
And the bypass DOES have to be removed right?

I got mine back today. It looks great!!! They realonized it to stop corrosion from forming.
They will do it for 150, if no leaks are found

That is at the aircraft repair shop. Remeber this is cleaned with a heated recirculated cleaning fluid, checked for leaks, Fins straightened/repaired. alonized and shipped. Sounds like a bargain to me. Remember, you do get what u pay for!!

Ohh, well now that you tell me all the details...yea that actually does sound pretty good. So it's pretty much new when you get it back?
Did you have to screw around with the bypass valve or did they know all that?
Okay I have to ask, what does alonized mean?
So the service was $115 plus shipping? sounds like you paid a good amount in shipping, did you get it 2 day or something or it's just that heavy?

send the bypass! they test it to make sure it is working right. It cost 12.35 to ship from SC to TX.they pay shipping back. Alonized is a protective coating, similiar to cadmium plating. I'll post pics later

How long was turn around, from when you sent it out, to the day you got it back?

115 was the original estimate. They had not done a FC cooler before. Whwn all was said and done total cost was 150 + 12.50 shipping. Turnaround was a week. It was in cleaning /flushing solution for 2 days.

I see, did you check around at other places? Does anyone know the exact size measurements of the cooler? I emailed a few places on the web for estimates.

Any pic's yet Banzai?
Another thing, when they tested the internal theromstat, did they tell you the temp it opens at, so you could make sure it's within factory spec?
I wonder what they charge to repair it if it's damaged in any way.
Anyone else think this is worth it?

I don't think its a brain surgery operation myself .. I used degreaser, parts cleaner... and flushed it through over and over. Then I hooked up my air compressor, tested for leaks at 140PSI and blew out the left over degreaser & stuff.
Jeez its just a oil cooler. Its like a radiator for Oil .
