Question Oil Cooler

So my oil cooler has a small leak and I'm wondering how much would it cost to replace it? Or is it easy enough to replace by myself? I already have another oil cooler, so if i take it to the shop, how much would the labor be? Thanks guys

The oil cooler is held on by 4 bolts, 2 on each side, and 2 oil cooler hoses (must replace crush washers when installing hose back) http://mazdatrix.com/b6.htm. If you already have another oil cooler, use that, as a brand new OEM one runs for about $700. It's much cheaper if you change it yourself. Where is the leak coming from, the hose or the actual cooler has a hole in it?

Damon, buddy, you own an RX-7. Do not count on being able to "just bring it to a mechanic" forever. I don't meen to sound like the forum jerk, but the replacement of an oil cooler is a very simple task that is accomplishable on your own Joe-Schmoe tools. If you have an oil cooler on hand waiting to replace it, I would reccomend you just do it yourself. Now here is a link to replace your oil cooler lines, but this will give you the help you need to swap the unit it's self. Good luck.

i wouldn't go that far, i find quite a bit that the bottom banjo bolt is on as tight as my $400 1/2" impact at 150psi can remove.

it should cost no more than $75 to have it replaced at a local auto shop.

YOu can do that easily yourself.
If you can change plugs,you can change an Oil cooler..(15/16ths is the size of the Banjo bolts).

Why do people say things like this?^^^ You now what happens when someone listens to this but have neither the tools nor the space/experince/whatever to do the job? A big mess, usually expensive for the guy to have to pay someone else to fix. If its never been apart, the oil cooler bolts might strip or even break off, the banjo end fittings on the lines could twist, bend, or tear, or a few other bad things, which will cost him more in time, money and mess than just taking to someone who knows how to do it.
Rotary or not, swapping an oil cooler is something any competent mechanic should be able to do. Alldata calls for 1.1 hours of labor to replace the cooler, which is likely to be well worth it when all is said and done.

Thanks for the responses everyone, but at the moment I don't have the proper space to do it. So hopefully it will cost around $75. I would attempt to do it, but my garage is a mess right now. Thanks again guys!

they're also not 15/16" bolt heads, unless you like stripped rounded off bolt heads. they're 23mm, which isn't commonly in the joe schmoe toolbox.

you guys should just quit while you're ahead.

how do you know the oil cooler itself is leaking? Maybe a crush washer needs to be replaced.

Or more likely, the oil cooler line is leaking...Only way to know for sure is to degrease the entire area and run the engine a little to find the leak.

I agree with those who say the OP should just take it to a shop. It is a straightforward job for a mechanic and should be done in an hour. The difficulty with doing it at home for the inexperienced is that the oil cooler bolts are often stuck and take considerable effort to remove. The rubber mounts tend to absorb a breaker bar or an impact gun which adds to the problem. And it would suck to crack the bung because now the OP is looking for someone to TIG weld the cooler...

And yes, 23MM. Every rotary mechanic has a 23MM socket in his/her toolbox for the oil cooler (and front cover oil regulator, as I recall...maybe also the rear oil regulator?).
