Angry Odd noise results in power loss

Ok i was driving my car yesterday and i noticed it was making this weird banging sound. It sounded like someone was beating the inside of a bucket with a stick and it got faster and faster as the rpms increased. Also i noticed that my car had almost absolutely no power, didnt make any sense to me. I parked my car infront of my house for about 5 minutes and let it idle while i ran inside. When i came back out the car drove fine and i didnt hear it again the entire trip. Any ideas as to what this could be or what may be causing it.

sounds like there was detonation...

could your leading coil or leading sparkplugs be in poor condition?? Or loose connections on the coil or bad spark cables???
