Thumbs down Now here is a mod that i would'nt have done over again.

Well, last night i finally got off of my butt, and tore apart my car down to the lower intake. Removed the L.I., removed the 6 port actuating rods, brass sleeves, and little cross bar in the pineapple sleeves. Well i flared the ends of the pineapple sleeves, stuffed them back in there all the way, ground down the bumps in the L.I. where the actating rods use to come out .. then slapped everything back together. I was expecting a increase of around 1-2% airflow. (read from the s-afc) Atleast thats what bambam7 said he noticed. After some driving i noticed i gained about .2%. I'm all for more power, but not at the sacrifice of the a bunch of bottom end. Over all, if i could go back without buying anouther L.I. i probably would. The loss of bottom end is to great for the power gains i noticed.

So, all you guys thinking about going wired open/removed/or like i did....its just not worth the power gains that i expereinced. CJ

Yep... I'm just used to having no power before 5000
rpms!
Did you cut the whole one side of the sleeve out too?
Sorry to hear you lost a lot of bottom end- You had totally functionaly aux ports before?

I did'nt loose all bottom end. But 750-3500 is just not nearly as peppy. I suppose a light weight flywheel would help...but i'm getting tired of putting money into the 2nd gen. The 3rd gen needs a power-fc, and some upgraded injectors.

Also, the car has more of a tendancy to just die when you are cruising with your a/c on, lights on, etc. when you put the clutch in when you come to a stop. Kinda a pain. I guess i'll just have to bump the idle up or something. CJ

CJ, I'm in my learning curve, What benefits have you seen from the s-afc install on the N/A. Cost vs benefits, ease of tuning, what tuning does it allow for N/A. Thanks John

Ok, I had wired open ports/VDI on my last 7. I am gonna leave em workin on the next one, and I will see if I like it. I will follow the crowd, and see for myself. I really enjoyed the feel of the wired ports, but I will succomb to the peer pressure....

Well, the s-afc was a must for me. For some reason my car did'nt realy like all the mods i did to it. When my car was all stock, it ran great. After the exasut, intake, and porting the motor/intake manifold, the ecu decided my car needed a 10-1 air fuel ratio. (I had it dyno'd.) It still managed to put down about 150rwhp with that a/f ratio. I bought a s-afc for $300, and it solved my over rich condition. I had it dyno tuned with the s-afc, and it put down 167rwhp. I'm very happy with the s-afc. It tells you all kinds of neat stuff, like air flow meter %, throttle %, rpms (exactly)...how much you have it leaned out. etc...Its very easy to install, and tune. Infact, just by butt tuning on the street i was within 4-5 peak rwhp. The dyno, helped a ton in mid range though where i was a bit off. O-well. But It was probably the best $300 i spent on the car so far.

I was chating with mazdspeed7 (Adam) awhile ago, and he gave me a web page showing how he did a cold air pickup. He was realy impressed with the results. I knew that i realy needed one, but this gave me some motivation. So yesterday (On the time clock ) I threw...well not realy...more like squeezed a flexiable 2 1/2" ID tube to the front of the radiator, where i hooked on the cone filter. Now the air filter sits right out in front to pick up all that cool air. THIS IS AN AWESOME MOD! I picked up about .8-1% more air flow! This fall, i plan on moving the filter back into the engine bay so the k&n won't get soaked in typical Oregon weather...but for now i'm going to hang it out there for everyone to see!. That did'nt sound good.....but anyways in 70f weather i'm pulling a 56.5% airflow reading now. This was up from the ~53% i had when i dyno'd 167rwhp.

Later, CJ
