Unhappy Not only turbo is busted, but exhaust manifold as well......

Yesterday finally managed to work on the car (mechanic was tied working with other FDs). Took off intake, exhaust, air pump, ABS, pre-cat, and lo and behold, exhaust turbine is damaged as ****

"Wait", he says. He unbolts the turbo completely, and there is this crack in the exhaust turbine housing

"Wait", he says once more. He then unbolts the exhaust manifold (which was already almost loose ) and this son of a bitch is cracked in FIVE DIFFERENT SPOTS One of them goes through to the outer side....

I'm in a deep, deep, DEEP hole filled with **** right now...

Nobody wants to consort me ??

Anyway, here are some prices:

New stock turbo: 4400EUR
New exhaust manifold: 400EUR

Slightly used turbo + slightly used exhaust manifold: 1300EUR

Still looking for a solid turbo housing (dont think I'll find it, but anyway....), so that I can cut costs down...

Turbo balancing: around 200EUR
Work: another 200EUR (easily, maybe 300EUR)

So I'm looking at 1600-1700 EUR easily, maybe more....

God damn, now I wish I had bought that '97 Civic VTi...

If someone did have an extra turbo, he would probably be in the US...shipping a turbo from US to Europe would almost double the cost ...if it ever arrived here.

But thanks for the thought man....

The only very very very small benefit is that I will have a brand new turbo and wastegate...but at a whopping price

How is shipping that much? I sent a package from Italy last summer, and it was only like $30 to get it home to Texas. ANd I have ordered stuff from Japan (videos, models, and amnga) and it takes FOREVER but is pretty decent in shipping. Is Greece just hard to ship to or what? And how much USD would all this cost?

Back when I wanted to order plugs and wires from the US, I went to a web shop (dont remember which) and found the plugs and the wires. Total cost something like 80-90 bucks. "Nice", i said. Well, after shipping and insurance, the cost went up to 160bucks

No, Greece is not that hard to ship to/from, its just the distance. And remember that a turbo is quite heavy, plus it could be viable for inspection. Higgi is still trying to get his things back from the US customs

And the thing is, I need this fixed very, very soon (like next week). This is my daily driver (we dont have the luxury of owning 3-4 cars here in Greece), and it is also occupying space at the shop...

If I cannt find anything better than the 1500EUR for the whole deal, I will have no other choice This is going to leave me high and dry....

Get an aftermarket one.

No kidding, man. Upgrade, Upgrade.

At least you won't feel as bad spending money as long as it makes your car faster. T04 hybrid. Same stock housing, just swapped internals, so it can be used on a stock manifold, a great upgrade. Look into Ace, please don't buy a stock turbo .

hhhmmmmmmm......come to think of it, this is easily done (and it will cost me a few euros more, but hey ?).

On the other hand, I WILL need upgaded pump (FD one maybe?) and injectors, in order to provide more fuel...

EDIT: Just talked to the RX7 guru (Petros) and he said that swapping the internals of the T04 is kinda useless, because neither the A/R or the airflow/speed is increased. Anyone has any comments or proof that T04 fits AND increases performance ?

If I had a EUR for every time I was asked this question...

Production stopped in '91, thats correct, but cars were still shipped in '92, and mine is one of those cars. Date of first licence is 4/92, with a sell date also in April 1992, so car is actually a '92 (could have been constructed in '91, havent yet checked)

My TII must be one of the last ones to make it out of the Mazda production line

The T-04 hybrid used the stock center cartridge and exhaust housing with a T-04 compressor housing and impeller. Your mechanic wants you to spend a lot more money with a true T-04 which requires an external wastegate, different manifold, different downpipe.

Sorry to hear about your problems. The only advice I can give you is to be carefull with expensive repairs without knowing the couse of the problems. You wouldn't want to spent 1500 euro's or more on your engine and finding out that it still has cooling problems.
But on the other hand the beginning of the cracks could have caused the problems in the first place. I think it's gonna be a tough decission. Good luck.

Marco.

PS. You could check Eurorotor, maybe he has some used parts. Ground shipping from the netherlands to greece shouldn't be to expensive.

OK guys, turbo update:

Both turbos that I found are shot. No good. One of them was looking good on the outside, but had a crack inside worse than mine, so....

Turbo Dynamics UK has a dealer here in Greece, who is able to get a rebuilt turbo from them for a little more than 700EUR. It'll take 3-4 days to arrive, so I'll have some more info (or even maybe the Rex rolling ) by the end of next week.

btw, I'm installing some gauges too (boost, water temp), and I'm thinking about oil temp and voltage too, but I dont want to be TOO greedy Got to make that A/F anyway sometime
