Not another timing Thread!!

I am having the same issue lots of people have but am looking for a little clarification on the method and possible problems I am encountering.

I am setting the initial timing on my b-in laws rex (87 sport model).

I pulled the pulley around untill the right mark (right as in the mark closest to the coils, if you are facing the motor) Removed the CAS and lined up the dimple with the pointer on the body of the CAS.. GREAT!

Removed the "lid" to the CAS and am attempting to see if the CAS is aligned properly, It appears to be close, I can turn teh cas and line it up with the two contact points.

Still it runs like shizer and will not start, I can pull start it and it bareley runs at all..

My main question is what am I doing wrong? The car was running and starting on it's own before I did this. I can't remember what I did wrong or last time I did this..lol.

There is a divot on the top of the CAS contact points spinny thing, only on one side.. does that have to line up with something? If so what? Any pictures of a correctly aligned CAS?

Someone please give me a detailed description of what it is supposed to line up with... INSIDE THE CAS ITSELF.

RRTEC..

Pull the spark plugs, but leave them in the wires. Put your timing gun (assuming you have one), on the L1 plug and have someone crank the car (Make sure you ground the tip of the spark plug). Adjust your timing accordingly.

J-Rat- long time no talk...

WTF? Is there a reason I can't time this the old fashioned way? I am reading tons of old post regarding this, but no-one posts a definite reason why after stabbing the CAS in the front cover correctly it still runs like crapola... wierd.

Because stabbing it is only a BALLPARK way to get you close. Then you have to fine tune from there.

When propperly timied where does the rotating mass on the top of the CAS (gold peice with two points) line up with?

The dimple matters not. I posted a jpg of a cas aligned recently...somewhere.

Tell you what. With the cas out, and the marks on the bottom alilgned, look in the top and see where the gears are in relationship to the pickups (black coils). Stab the cas. Turn the cas until the top now looks like it did when the cas was out and the bottom marks were aligned.

The engine should run just fine if you do that. IF it does not, it's another thing. Trail plugs on backwards?

Actually if the two teeth on top are cutting the edges of the black coils ....that's good enough. That jpg is where mine is after using a timing light. Others vary I'm sure.

Hmm, maybe it's something else.... It is lined up right... What would make it be so horrible.?
