Is it Normal for an Automatic rx7 to Spool SLOW!?

I have an rx7 gxl auto, and it spools SLow, is this because of all the Fluid in the converter? and is this normal?

Yes its normal because there is no turbocharger on it to "spool". Its a normally aspirated engine, so its acceleration through the RPMs is not as quick as an engine with a turbocharger.

N/a Auto Vers N /A Manual Do the manuals rev faster? i was thinking that the Flywheel is Lighter than the converter on a Auto? thats basicly the question

My Auto is very slow from the take off. around 3K RPM it starts to come alive and pulls strong through 7k. But it does the same in first gear or second or third. Anything below 3k is sluggish

the auto tranny sucks, really really bad. Do a manual swap and you'll be much better off. My friend had a 91 GXL auto and it only ran a 17.8 with intake and exhaust. I don't know if there are any aftermarket converters for that tranny, i erally doubt it, or even a shift kit for it but i really don't think there is much hope with those trannys. Of course if anyone knows of anything or even a fast auto rx7 please speak up and correct me

yes mine is the same way, I can floor it and it Just kinda speeds up slow. worse than a garbage truck, then i hit 3 , 4k its like im on fire, then when it hits second then pick up is slow agian!

But what i really is when the car is outa gear, the revs on an auto vers a manual. Is there a diffrence?

Anyway, when I first bought my GXL, it was an automatic, but it wasn't as slow as I've been hearing some peoples cars are. Even back when I first bought it other people were talking about how slow theirs was. Try replacing the auto tranny filter and changing the fluid. Do like the book says and cycle through all the gears, then check the fluid level and top it off if needed, but don't over fill it. Its not going to be "pop the clutch" fast from a stand still, but it shouldn't be Geo Metro slow. I replaced my tranny with a manual tranny only cause I had drove the car and the auto fluid leaked out cause the speedo cable came out of the tranny. I eventually was going to replace it, but I would have been satisfied with it being an auto for the time being.

I been searching on the internet for a while and I can't find anything about an aftermarket torque converter. All I found was an aftermarket auto tranny controller, but it only works for FDs and that dosn't help us here.

Do a 5 speed swap and gain some power. Auto's aren't exactly going to give you any performance even with modifications.

Technically, you'd be making more power available to the wheels, not making more power

Auto trannys need tourque if you want them to take off fast, and the RX-7 isnt exactly a tourqe monster 3k-4k is were the power band really starts to take off, thats why you feel an increase in acceleration. This is why you NEVER EVER EVER buy a sports car with a frickin auto tranny. Unless of course its something with a beefy tourqe curve like a 300zx or something.

true but when i step on the gas it grabs right away, I dont know if they make converters for our auto's But if they do. Id buy it. Not only that But if they had a switch for the autos' where you could Push the switch so the tranny wont Pull, than at about 4 or 5 K you could let off and the Fluid would let loose Just like dropping the Clutch, now that would Rock, But i allready have a pattent on a few of my ideas, So dont try anything,

Don't worry Adam (LOL) we won't try anything. Here is a good one that I came up with, and you can have the patent. Make a throw out bearing to push the torque converter away from the flywheel. Attach it with the missing third petal and whala. instant launch. Use it to get off the line and cruise on the beach while not racing.

If you are trying to run your Auto 7, use the hold button and put the shifter down in 1st. run the RPMs up to 7.5K and shift into 2nd. The next gear is above 3k so your OK. You'll never beat anybody in a drag race but AutoX only starts off the line once. Then it is all driver and the Auto being shifted properly (with the hold button depressed) can be very fast. The turns are never slower than 15 MPH. So your in the power band.
