best run was a 15.4
Stock everything
with the exception of a 2" straight pipe
Most of my runs where 16's to high 15's
like 15.8 15.9
I was pissed doing high fifteens
so I added 1 gallon of 102 race fuel
and then I remember from my FB days
about rotarys loving advanced timing
I advanced the timing a few degrees
while in the tracks pit stop.
I felt a mojor diffrence and ran 15.5
then followed that up with a 15.4
I'f I was going to get another N/A
I would have it secondary Bridgeported
J.W Holly Manifold
650 Double Pumper
RB exhaust
and 4.30 gears
that would be good for mid 13's
with a 75 Shot of NOS
would get down to low 12's.
But I'm so Happy to have 2 Turbo RX7's
GXL and a TII project car
My SE was fun

compared to what we got in my Town
there are lot's of Turbo civic's and skyline powered 240's
Turbo SE-R's Turbo Miatas etc
Most people hear are Hardcore
and If you want to run with the Big Boyz
you better run NOS or Turbo.

I think true sports cars don't have all that frilly useless crap on it, the GTU is a good example of a true sports car, its a no-nonsense machine. Alot of sports cars today have too much stuff that you don't need, which just slows them down.

My other car is a 1990 Maxima. I have it garaged at the present, since obtaining my 86 N/A. The Maxima is a great car, I bought it new. Very low maintanance, still rides nice. Mine is a 4DSC model (better suspension+leather) and reading this thread reminds me of a story...
This was around 1991-92 and my brother had what I remember to be an 89 GXL, red with adjustable suspension, all the options. A pretty fast car. I was in my Maxima next to him at a light, 2 lane hi-way out of town that flowed into one lane and merged onto a freeway about 3/4 miles up the road. We had not raced and as the lite went green we took off. I stayed with him all the way and pulled away near the merge, both of us doing well over 100 at this point. Pretty even all the way if I remember correctly.
I entered the freeway ahead of him and the freeway just before the merge had a big sweeping curve with both roads straightening at the merge. Unbelievably, you know who was just coming around that curve on the freeway right up behind us. I will never forget looking into my mirror and seeing my brother behind me and the state highway patrol behind him. Sh*t, cost us both $$$ and points. But I would say I beat him. The Maximas' are pretty fast cars.

did you ever make it to the track or a dyno?i was reading through here recently,and noticed u had mentioned u might be getting your car on a dyno jan.19th,and i have been pretty busy the last couple of month,so i'm not sure if i missed a post about it.anyhow,my car should make somewhat close to the power your making once its done,so i was definately curious what times/hp #'s ur running.thanks!

I've owned both and if anything I'd say the NA is MORE of a sportscar than the TII. The only thing I liked about the TII was that the engine power balanced the chassis better. However, my modded NA had similar power to my stock TII and it felt just right.

Eh, I just would say that when it comes to sports model, the basic model would have to be a sportscar to qualify the line. I don't understand the distinction between the N/As and the Turbo cars. A base Eclipse is not a sportscar, while the Spyder is. And a base Escort is not a sports car, while the ZX2 (Supposedly) is. But the turbo RX-7 really isn't that far from the N/A. You don't see Mazda pulling all kinds of gimics and tricks out of their hat to distinguish the turbos from the N/As. Meanwhile, you DO see Mistu and Ford calling the ZX2 and Spyders a different car for a reason.
Argh. Suddenly I doubt my own arguement. But I keep thinking of how cruddy my friend's basic model Eclipse is, and all the others I've seen. It's like Mistubishi had to go all the way back to the chassis to really whip up a sportscar there... Okay, let's just put it this way: The rotary engine was initially used for cargo airplanes and racing. Small, light, design with a heckuva lot of power, letting your car really ride on low weight. In fact, it's used now in that funkyass flying car that you see now and then on the Discovery channel because it's so light. But, yeah. It's a minipowerhouse. The RX-7 just has to exist in the way it does to compliment its output so that the outcome is a sportscar.
But yeah: So light. Fifty fifty balance. Two seater. Usual dose of five speed. Zero to sixty times under ten seconds. That should set some buyers at ease.
Now when I ran into an FD owner at school today and he asked me if I had a T2 did I not feel like a ***** for having to say, "No."? Of course I did. But it's still an RX-7. We own the only two in a school of Civics and Eclipses.
And you know no Firebird or Eclipse or Civic is going to handle like this car.

I'd call the NA more of a sportscar because it's lighter, and simpler than the TII. Now that I think of it I believe there is an old article (Motortrend?) that compares the 10thAE to the GTU and chooses the GTU because of it's more sporting qualities. I read the article online, but I don't know if I could find it right now.

One could also argue that the regular 911 is more of a sportscar than the 911 Turbo. And there is no doubt that the slower GT3 is more of a sportscar than the Turbo.
This is assuming, of course that you consider the 911 a sportscar in the first place...

Let me break it down for you like this......
Both the Turbo II and the NA second generation RX-7 have only two doors, are rear wheel drive, handle superbly, have a good power to weight ratio, they also have a near 50/50 weight balance, ect. ect. ect. Basically the only major difference is that one is turbocharged and one is not.
I have a sport model, same suspension and brakes as the Turbo without the needless 'techno toys' such as power windows. I consider it to be essentially a turbo without the turbo. And here's a shocker for you, I like not being a turbo! I actually shopped around for an NA, even though I had the money to buy a Turbo II! Don't get me wrong, I love Turbo IIs and will probably own one someday, but an NA suits me better for the time being. Less things to go wrong in my book.
If you say the naturally aspirated RX-7 is not a true sports car you are a moron, plain and simple. Adding a turbo to a car does not make it a sports car, the foundation of a sports car (the NA) must be there before anything. All RX-7 owners are cool in my book, we all drive the best sport car to ever come out of Japan.
