Newby needs advice...

without a lot of research, I became an RX-7 owner today (1988 Conv.),before I could get it home for the first time, the engine flooded, so the owner mentioned something about a fix to this issue, other than making damn sure you warm the engine before turning it off...some helpful advice on how to avoid this in the future would be welcomed....

I've owned 3 7's myself, and one thing I did in each one, was to put an external on off switch to the fuel pump.
This way if it ever does flood, I can just turn the fuel pump off, turn it over a few times to clear the fuel out of the engine, and turn it back on, 9/10 times she'll fire right up.

But this is me.

You will also want to keep in mind that a flooding car is a sign of a more serious issue. Mainly low compression and less likely, leaky injectors. I would get your compression checked to assess the health of the engine that is in your car. A fuel shutoff switch is only a band-aid fix.

I've been told that you should clamp the fuel lines closed, remove the spark plugs and clean them up real good(or replace them), crank the engine a few times to blow out the gas. Return the plugs to the engine and she should fire right up. If not repeat the steps until she does.
Also I have been told that if the car has flooded severely enough you should immediately change the oil before any serious driving.

As far as it meaning low compression, that is true in some situations, but if you did shut your car off before it reached full operating temperature, most rotaries will flood when you try to start it again. Because the engine stays in cold start mode.
Carbeurated are of course less likely to.
