newbie questions on the 2nd gen Rx7

Hi I am from the Mr2 board and I am looknig for a car to complement my current one. I saw a 2nd gen Rx7 at a nearby used car dealer. and anted to see if oyu guys thought it could be good to buy.

Car has about 170k on it ( )
the engine looks relatively clean
I don't remeber seeing any badges on it identifying trim
a badly ripped drivers seat
the interior looks as if time forgot it (it looks really dingy)
it has a dual exhuast and one of the tail pipes is broken.
I don't see soot all over the back of the car
outside looks like it hasn't been washed in years

you guys think this could be a good car to commute in if it's good shape and I give it a tune up.

Personally I wouldn't touch it if you are looking for a car that will get you from point A to point B without many problems. I am sure you could clean it up and get it working alright but you will have plenty of problems with it. Don't get me wrong, they can be fun but it sounds like you want more of a reliable car. I am sure some people would want to take me out back and shoot me for saying this but I would go for a Honda Civic SI or something like that because it will be fun and won't break down. Also has great gas milage

My 2 cents.

Well, the engine is probably about toast by now, unless it has already been rebuilt. A rebuild is about $2,000 from a rotary engine shop (you really gotta look around to find one), or about $800 if you do it yourself. Clean engine bay = steam cleaning, which doesn't say much either way. Hehehe, the driver's seat usually starts to rip around 80,000 miles, or at least the bolsters give out around then - no big deal. The tail pipes usually get broken when someone tries to drop the exhaust system without putting a jack under it first. If it's the original exhaust, then you can plan on replacing it ($600-900), which is actually a very good way to make power as well as avoid traffic tickets for being too loud.

If it doesn't have any badges, then it's probably a base model of some type, or has been repainted. 4-lug wheels = 86-88 base model.

Here is a good site which tells you what to look for:

Be sure to check out kbb.com so that the used car dealer doesn't rip you off. Also be sure to get the compression checked at an auto shop that knows rotary engines, as it is not quite the same method as checking the compression on a piston engine.

hmmm.. well I look at the car a little more and see if it's worth my time.

Rotorific: I don't judge by looks my philosophy: If there's no go there's no show. My car doesn't look too good either BTW LOL
