Newbie Question...

Hey Guys, I'm new around here, so I thought I'd drop a note sayin hi.
Anyway, what I'm really here for, is my nieghboor bought an '82 Rx-7 about a year ago. At the time it hardly ran and loked hideous. Well, we put some time, money, and hard work into the thing and got it working and presentable again.

(Sorry it's so big, Im posting from work with no Image Software)

Anyway, after working on it so long, I kinda took interest in this car, and I decided I wanna get one of my own. But personally I like the second generation ones alot better than the first, and I can't afford a third gen. So my question is, I want to by one, and I need to know how I can tell from ads in the paper and on auto-trader which ones are turbos, and which ones aren't. I know the GXL isn't a turbo, but I never see a listing that says turbo on it, so I'm lost. If anyone could let me know how I can tell its a turbo, that would be great.

Also, everyone uses the term "FC" alot on this board. Anyone fill me in on that one?

Thanks for your help.

FC is the term used to refer to the 2nd gen. FD is the 3rd gen, and SA/FB is the 1st gen. Those initials are derived from the VIN, they are the initials in the VIN that refer to the RX-7.

On the 2nd gens, if it has any type of model designation, whether it's GTU, GXL, Base, Sport, then it's non-turbo. All 2nd gen turbos were called "Turbo II." So, the seller will either list it as a "Turbo II," or just call it a turbo. If in doubt, might as well contact the seller.

the problem is that half of the people selling rx7's don't know what the hell they're talking about, much less list the model name. you have to call them and ask specific questions to figure out what it is they're trying to sell.

beware of ads that contain any of the following phrases:

new timing belt
4 cylinder
6 cylinder

AreExSeven,

Hey welcome to the forum. Check thepartstrader.com for a good selection. Ebay is another good place.

The turbo model is called "turbo II", so that makes it easy

I think you'll love these cars. The Turbo II, especially in the 89-92 years is a SUPERCAR. More HP, grip, torque, & handling than most people can control.

Here's a good discussion thread you should check out.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

Best advice - buy a dirt cheap one with blown motor & repair it yourself OR find one with "low engine miles," "newly rebuilt", or "new engine."

Either way, get a certified mazda compression test done on the engine.

Hey thanx for the help guys.

Another question. vaughnc, I looked on ebay at the turbo II's and I noticed that all of them had a scoop/air intake type thing on the hood, and all the non turbos did not. Was this just coincidence or is it a method of determining if it is a turbo or not from talking to a seller?

All Turbo IIs came stock with that hood scoop you saw. All non-turbos came stock with no hood scoop. Some people will put the TII hood on an N/A because they like the look and most TII hoods were aluminum and most N/A hoods were steel. It makes for a big weight difference.

The hood scoop is there because the TIIs were intercooled and the scoop fed air into the intercooler, which was mounted on top of the engine.
