The Gen Is are obviously very cheap. I believe in the last 2 years, the Gen Is had 13B mortors in them (found in the 2nd Gens as well).

The 2nd Gens of course were fuel injected and not carborated (sp?).

The 2nd Gens went from 86-92. The 89-92 models have more horsepower and tend to be slightly higher quality.

The SE, GXL, and GTU models are very reliable in the drivetrain and can go 200K miles very easily.

The Turbo II is one of the highest quality factory production race car every built. The engines last 140K miles before needing a rebuild. Most people try to buy a Turbo II for $2000 with a blown engine or $4500 with a rebuild engine. Either way - you'r looking at $3500-$7500 for a Turbo II normally depending on the shape it's in. Best way to tell is get a compression test done on the engine before buying.

There's a 10th Aniversary Turbo II model in 88 that's collectible and the 1992 (caryover year) Tubro IIs are also hard to find.

The turbo II is one of the best supercars ever built and a blast to drive. Perfect 50/50 balance, light weight, low to the ground, 160MPH, lots of grip, TONS of bodykits, TONS of performance upgrades, TONS of accessories - oh yeah!!!

The engine can make 400 reliable HP very easily and the 20B motor can make 600 reliable HP very easily.

Stock HP on a 88-92 turbo can beat stock GT mustangs.

If you want to know why I own a turbo II:
blast to drive, seat of your pants ride, great for autocrossing, I can rev the engine all day long and never hurt it, feels great with the windows down at 85MPH (or any speed), tons of performance potential, it's NOT a 5.0 and beats a 5.0, etc... etc...

The convertible's also very cool car. The Mica blue models are hard to find. I eventually want to swap the Turbo II tranny & engine into a convertible.

If you've worked on Mustangs before, you'll love working on these cars. Not near as much stuff that can go wrong and their fairly straighfoward.

Well as far as the TII motor going bad at 140,000 miles is strictly depending on the car. A buddy of mine had a 87 TII with over 200,000 miles on it...or very close to that and he drove the hell out of the car as it seemed evident that the previous owner(s) did. So the millage is going to vary.

I believe the 1st gen rx7 had a 12a motor in them not 13b. oh or are you saying the last of the first gens had 13bs' in them. If that is the case i dont know..all i ever heard was 12a in 1st gens. Hell someone will set us straight.

Rx7s will also run fairly good with a crappy motor.

Vaughnc pretty much hit everything else straight on so no point to repeat it. By the way vaughnc i aint flaming or nothing.

later.and good luck finding a rx7...in myopion i would go for a TII any year would be fine. I do like the 89-91 better but if it is a rx7 and turbo i cant resist it.

Yep - neighbor races a 13B Gen I and say's only in the last 2 years were they available.

I think the 86-88 TIIs had more lifespan due to less HP, lower compression rotors (think that's how their described), and lower OEM boost - from what I've read anyway.

I'd imagine the 89-92's could go 200K if you drove it right, but most sites say rebuild at 140K.

1st Gen 13B

I had a 1st gen w/13B in it. SWEET CAR. They are the GSL-SE models (SE stands for special edition). They upgraded the 12A carb motor to a 13B Fuel injected!!!
These cars are rare, collectable, and very fun!. They have the light weight of a 1st gen and the power of the 2nd gen.

1st gen had 13B's in the GSL-SE models only, as far as I know. The GSL-SE's are pretty awesome, if you can find one that isn't thrashed.
