new rebuild having cooling problems

i just dropped a rebuilt motor in and got it started and i can't seem to get the needle on my gauge to 1/4 it's a little below 1/2. The top hose going to the radiator isn't gettting pressurized like my previous rx7's were i don't know if this is what it's suppose to do.

also the engine doesn't like to idle at lower rpms do i have to put some miles on it for it to run better?

getting some mileage on it and building compression will definitely help the idle and power. as far as the cooling issue, make sure you have bleed all the air out, that there are no leaks anywhere and that your radiator caps are sealing and in god condition.
