The way we check timing off the pulley and the way TDC is set are totally different. I wouldn't be surprized if you were sparking on an apex seal before if you tried setting it to the pulley marks.
When you stab the CAS you need to turn it back a little to get the right tooth in place so she lines up when fully seated. I really don't know a better way to describe this. I wish I had a digital camera for my rebuild because I'd have a full how-to set of pics for you right now. Oh well, I'll do my best to help with what we've got to work with.

It sounds to me like it's firing on either the last second of the compression stroke or the very begining of combustion.

Yep, we've got the problem then...
Page 25 part group 14 of this link is the stuff you need to remove. Mine was a bit rust locked on but with enough coersion she'll come off.

Leave the center bolt alone! You might need to use a hammer on the edge of the pulley to break it loose. It's pretty durrable so don't worry about bending it. (within reason)

hey man im having the same dam problem as you. ive almost given up. my last resort was changin a few sensors (still waiting on them). id really waiting on what happen to your car maybe itll shed some light on my situation. good luck!

I fixed the pulleys, but it still didnt start. Tomorrow I'm going to clean the spark plugs and remove the nology wires, and give it another shot.

I pulled off the pulley, and learned it only goes on one way. Each individual pulley has a circle stamped on in and the hub has a dimle drilled in it. I turned the hub so the dot lined up with the timing pin, and reinstalled the CAS which was alinged. I noticed the green paint on the inside of my pulley is alligned with the drilled dot. so for future reference I dont have to remove the pulley. I threw the belts back on cranked in over and nothing. The motor is obviosly firing now though because there is white smoke instead of gas and oily smoke coming out of the exhaust. I had this same problem with nology wires on my Honda, I changed the spark plugs to non platinums and It wouldnt run, changed wires and it ran great, swapped the wires and plugs back and it ran better, so I think the Nology's are tempermental.
Today, I'm going to replace the plugs, the wires and try it again.
I have a job interview this morning so I won't get to it until this afternoon, but I'll post what happens.

It's been raining, hailing, and just all around nasty here. I decided to use the down time to charge my battery, buy some new plugs and regroup. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and be cold, so if I get the chance I'm going to hook up the fresh battery and give it a try.

Update.
I threw in the towel. The car finally won. I pushed it down the street to Bi-State customs, the place where boostedsevens seven is. I hope they can exorcize the demons living in the car. I wan't my baby back!

Oh man, I just read this entire thread and can't believe the problems you're having. I am glad you're sticking with it though rather than dropping the V8 into it, heheh. I am getting a rebuilt engine soon (2 weeks or so) and this is making me nervous, lol.

I was just pissed off, I'm still considering a swap though.
Only the swap is going to be a FD 13btt with one big *** turbo instead of two smaller ones.

Just read through the entire post. I found it on a search. I got an engine/tranny for $250 out of a crashed car and could not get it to start for the life of me. Then instead of the battery charger I hooked up my truck w/ a high amp alternator. After a couple tries(pulling f.i. fuse) it started! and ran! So I hope you have figured out your engine problems. The info here sure helped me. Thank you for the thread!

They got it to start!!!
The car finally started, and ran on it's own for about a minute then died. I bought the guys some new spark plugs, and their un flooding it and hoping it will start monday. The new problem: oil leaks the oil injectors are leaking, so is the oil pressure thingy in the pulley of the eccentric shaft.
But it RAN!!!
