New to the 7
Ok guys (gals) I was thinking about building an rx-7 as a weekend/pleasure cruiser that I can also take to the local road course for driver schools and opens track days. I have a few friends with 7's and they have all told me that on a budget that my best route would be to go with a 1986-1988 gxl with the LSD, rebuild the motor and have it streetported. I would like to know if this would actually be my best route and any more info that I would need to get into the semi-race/street car. All info given would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Thomas

if you are going to go with the gxl, i would reccomend removing the aas(auto adjust suspension)the gxl was also the heaviest non-turbo coupe, fyi. other than that, it sounds like pretty good exhaust. make sure to do a full tune up on the car when you get it, and if your going to be tracking the car, youll want to elminate the dtss(rear steer)it is VERY annoying during hard cornering.
welcome to rx-7 ownership, i think youll enjoy it

I've read all the FAQ's and have learned a whole lot from them.
I figured just for starters suspension wise I would just do the toe-eliminaters and the dtss so that I could just get a feel for the car before I start doing and major suspension upgrades.
As for the motor I will more then likely just do a full tune up, get a full exhaust and run it until it blows then get a full rebuild and streetport.

DTSS may have worked back in the day, but now seeing how it is worn out, and the replacement part to fix it costs a ton its cheaper to just get the emilinater bushing. As far as a GXL being the best. That is just a matter of opion. 88GTU IMO is the best S4. Look up everythign in the facts and youll see why.

Yeah i know the GTU is the best but the problem is finding one in my price range in the area, weight really isn't an issue as i'll probably be striping alot of the interior.

ive got an 88 gxl that i run quite often. i was using to a drift project car and managed to drop about 50 pounds with an aluminum hood, bbs convertable wheels and some other interior removals. it hands good in my opinion, but my car before this was an accord so it handles like a dream compared to that. right now ive swapped to a 90 gxl for my drift car. dont know alot about the 90 yet since i just got it. but i would say go for a gxl and you could do about anything from there on. my LSD is still good and my tranny and engine run strong at 156k miles. also i only paid $1000 for it. so just to kinda give you a price range. well, im kind of just rambling, but good luck man.
