Question In need of TII exhaust help!

Hello everyone!

I am the new owner of a 87 TII. The car had been sitting for the last five years, but started right up after I replaced the fuel pump.

This is not my daily driver and will only be used in spring/summer. I would also like to Autocross the car with the SCCA. The car also has an aftermarket intake on it.

Currenlty the car has the stock exhaust system on the car. The pre-cat and main-cat are both shot (small holes) and need to be replaced. The mufflers and y-pipe look okay (so far).

Here is the other thing: the previous owner also included and DP and pre-silencer (I think?!). See pic.

For the time being (due to budget) I would like to replace both cats. Living near Chicago, emission testing is a concern. From what I have read, I can ditch the pre-cat and go with a down pipe. It is my understanding the the pre-cat is only there for cold start emissions.

That leaves the main cat. It seems I have two choices:
1. Purchase the Bonez unit (approx $300, or more if I buy the DP).
2. Take it to a shop and get a Dynomax free flow cat installed.

Here are my questions:
1. Anyone know who makes this DP and pre-silencer?
2. Will eliminating the pre-cat automatically push the car out of the "Stock" SCCA autocross class and into "Street Prepared" class?
3. Are the Dynomax cats worth a lick? (I have read conflicting reports on this!)

I would appreciate and feedback/suggestions! I need to make a choice soon!

Thanks for posting the pic Vaughnc!

Can anyone at least tell me their experiences with the Bonez Turbflo Main Cat Replacement?

Any experience with Dynomax cat would also be helpful.

Yes, removing or modifying the exhaust before the cats is illegal in stock. You can change from the cat, back.

Okay, that answers my question regarding autocross classification. It looks that any modification to the TII exhaust system will move me into Stree Prepared.

Well I still have to put some type of replacement cat on my TII. Anyone have any recommendations?

Bonez? Dynomax?

hey fresh38 im just about in the same bind, i just got a 88 t2 with no exhaust that is still good, im trying to get something with a highflow cat, because i don't feel like playing games at inspection time, too much of a hassle

Can anyone share experience of bonez street legal DP and cat and catback system (like $800) or any other brands with a cat?

hey guys. Well I'm using the RB (RacingBeat) system. Downpipe and Presilencer. So far I love both and I can feel the difference. For the catback, I have the Corksport and its great too. Altho, a bit loud, I can live with it. Still not as loud as N1. I think if you get the RB package (DP and presilencer), it'll be cheaper than getting Bonez. I got the RB package for $210 straight from RacingBeat.

Kevin,

Which catback system did you get from Corksport? I went to their webpage and they had a couple of options.

It looks as thought I'm going to have a generic cat put on at the muffler shop to pass emissions. Then I'm going to go with the DP and silencer seen in the pic above. Matter of fact I tried to fit those parts to my stock exhaust system yesterday and it wouldn't line up correctly. Any thoughts?

As for the catback... it looks like it will have to be replaced soon. I have been searching like a madman on this sight about catback systems and their seems to be alot of conficting reports.

Pacesetter = cheap garbage?
Dynomax = aluminzed pipes, w/ fiberglass packed mufflers, only good for awhile
Borla = thin stainless --> loud!
Racing Beat = seems to be the next best in price, but that goes for at least $600!

fresh38, the bonez catback is 2.5 inch (i think) and is like $400... I just wish i could find someone with one to tell me how it sounds and the quality...

Also if that set up you have a picture of above is 3 inch you are going to have a hard time hooking it to the stock, right?

I think the bonez catback is the same as the Dynomax catback, and just painted black - someone please correct me if I'm wrong! If that is true, then it is not made from stainless steel. Also this would mean the mufflers were packed with fiberglass and not packed with stainless steel. Some people say the fiberglass would not last with the high rotary temperatures.

The system shown above is not 3". It has the 2.25" ID piping which is same as stock.
