need to know what the problem is.....!!!!

theres something that i need to know....i just bought a second gen. 1987 gxl (coupe) red interior, theres a few things wrong with it and i need to get a prime idea on what that is....so i basically know what im getting in to....first when i start the thing and let it try to warm up, the idle jumps up and down and sometimes it just dies that and when it does warm up it smells like its running lean also the idle stops jumping and stays at about 1500rpms....then when i give it gas and let it return to idle it doesent catch and goes below 1000rpms to about 500rpms shakes then goes back to jumping then 1500rpms again....i wanna know what causes the motor to do that....so if someone, anyone can give me some info on that then that would be great....

thanks for your time....

also if anyone has any parts for the inside interior that are red and would like to sell them please let me know....
the car is 1987 Rx-7 GXL hardtop (coupe)
i need the following parts....

the left hand door vent
the top dash vents left and right
the center bezel
the ash tray
the shifter boot and surround
the driver side seat
the clip that holds the bar that holds the hoop up
the steering wheel cover top and bottom
the door railing driver and passenger

if i can think of anything else ill post it....

the throttle position sensor, vacuum leak, misadjusted throttle cable/plates, or BAC valve (i'd check them in that order if i were working on mine). pick up a haynes manual from local autostore and it will tell you how to adjust those things to spec.

check out the parts for sale section of the forum for those parts.

You have a vacuum leak it sounds like, you sound like me i just love buying un needed things, DONT buy anything until you knows its broken, 7s arent cheap. check your whole intake hose, make sure theres no crackes and everythings tight, check your air filter maybe its really really dirty. it sounds like a vacuum leak try that first.

yeah i do like buying crap that i dont really need but im pretty sure that its something with the fuel system or like you said vacuum leak but i know its not anything major cause it still runs good i just have to fix that problem first before i start using it...that and hope it passes smog...(witch i dont think it will so i have to figure something out...) i know its not the air filter or the intake hose, so that narrows it down to vacuum leaks, or the fuel stuff so ill check on that a.s.a.p. thanks for the help guys....

ill keep you guys posted and updated so check back....

You said you adjusted the idle, but did you get your TPS adjusted to spec first. In addition to vacuum leaks, and out of adjustment TPS will also cause idle surge.

sounds like classic example of a bad or mis-adjusted TPS, but I too would recommmend checking for a vac leak.

And parts wanted, or for sale should be posted in the wanted/for sale section of the board, not here in the 2nd gen technical section.

pardon me smart guy....if you want to get technical about it yeah i should do that but since i was posting here i figured might as well do it here....that way people look and see if they just might have one of the many parts that i need....

ANYWAY....

update time!!
i was looking around for any vacuum hoses that might be disconnected and what do i find?
like 2 of them that were eather pluged off or just sitting there sooo im going to have to figure out how to reconnect them and look for more hoses that might be off....i was thinking that i should replace the fuel components anyway since i dont really know when they were service'ed or replaced that and i need to know where i can get a good aftermarket exhaust with all the cats so i can have a chance with smog....speaking of witch does anyone know how many cats a 1987 gxl (coupe) has? i looked under mine and i cant see more then one is that right? i have a feeling that the car has been sitting for most of its life cause i looked in to replacing the brake pads and i saw that all the bushings and springs/suspension were still looking good....that or the previous owner replaced them witch i dout cause the guy i bought it from dident look like he knew a thing about rx7's witch is why he was selling it in the first place, thats my guess....what do you think?

cant wait for it to get on the road....

well for those of you that care enough to read my blathering about my car....heres the long awaited update...

i've been kinda lazy due to the first gen taking my time up but its been running fine so i was sitting there and said to myself get off your *** and work on the second gen....so theres alot of things that i did to it first i replaced the gauge cluster with a new one then i replaced the gauge cluster bezel but kinda messed up due to the plastic being brittle and broke the little clips that the screws hold the bezel to the face....damn, so i got that fixed
it was so fun just to do that...it took some time because i had to take all the buttons out of the bezel and unscrew all the components....after all that i saw that i had no steering cover
so i got one....and installed it, that wasent too hard then i looked under the hood and decided to try to redo the vaccum lines that were disconnected, but to no avail (i even had the manuel to guide me but those things are complecated...) i already knew that the clutch master and slave had to go so i went and got those and replaced them that took forever with the crap tools that i have but fun nonetheless (yeah after i was done..) as of right now im looking into replacing the fan and fan clutch since the one i have is seized up and wont spin....also going to replace the oil cooler on it cause the one on it now doesnt seem to look to good right now....i want to replace the inside but i was given some good advice "dont fix the interior untill you get it running" so yeah i agree but with me i want to fix everything....i dont know....theres so much more i want to fix on the engine but ill save that for when i do it....i suppose thats all for now...thanks to all that read this...

im open for suggestions on what to do with the motor....any little that i might miss that you can remember....thanks again...

Congrats on buying a FC to accomadate your FB. There are several vacuum line fittings that are capped off period. A Fc has a total of 3 cats, 2 precats and then the main cat just before the catback. Your Idle issue sounds like a misadjusted TPS or vacuum leak, as a vacuum leak will make the car idle high, even one line not attached exposign the manifold to unmetered air will cause a nice 1500 rpm idle. As for your smogging, check with anyone in CA on the forums as they have lil tricks you can perform to pass inspection should you opt for some performance parts on your NA.

hey man remember if you ever set the idle, tps, timing or anything like that you have to put a jumper wire in your initial set coupler to connect the two terminals so the computer will read your changes. if you adjust any of this withought jumping the initial set coupler the computer will have a hard time understanding your changes. and dont forget to take the jumper wire out after you finish your changes or else your car will drive like ***... becuase it will be in a "learn state" or "learn mode" whatever you want to call it

as far as me goes ive seemed to have cured the bouncing idle and got it to idle at 1500 but cant get it to idle below that, (sucks) but im making progress...somewhat, i want to replace the fuel filter and the throttle body cause it seem that im missing something there, i wish i could post pic but i cant do it for some reason, i know i have to replace the fan and fan clutch, and i just replaced the clutch master and slave with the steel braided clutch line and works like a charm....i looked to see if there was a vac leak and theres two lines disconnected....that i can see anyway, one is sucking air and has a green bulb attached to it and one is not sucking or blowing air and has nothing attached to it....i dont quite know what that is soo....if theres anyone who can maybe guess or knows what im talking about, man i wish i could post pics to show you guys, the two lines are located by the throttle body kinda under it....
